Cavs fire Byron Scott after 24-win season

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — Kyrie Irving was surprised, disappointed and deeply hurt. With everything the Cavaliers’ All-Star guard has experienced during two seasons in the NBA, nothing prepared him for this.

This was as painful as any injury.

“I just lost my head coach,” Irving said, his voice barely above a whisper. “This is all new to me right now. I’m just trying to get over the loss of my basketball father.”

A Cleveland team has ditched yet another coach.

Scott’s future in question with Cavs

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — As the Cavaliers descend to the bottom of the standings in the final days of another depressing season, questions have mounted about coach Byron Scott’s future.

No doubt, he’s in trouble.

And while there are plenty of excuses — injuries and a lack of talent are atop the list — for Cleveland’s awful record, Scott’s not using any of them.

Source: Browns have deal with LB Paul Kruger

CLEVELAND — A person familiar with the agreement says free agent linebacker Paul Kruger, who led the Super Bowl-champion Baltimore Ravens in sacks last season, has agreed to contract terms with the Cleveland Browns.

Kruger, a former Utah Ute, and the club agreed to a five-year deal Tuesday, said the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because it has not yet been announced by the Browns. Kruger gives the Browns a proven pass-rusher as they transition to a new defensive system.

Jazz flat at the finish, lose to Cavaliers

CLEVELAND — For more than 40 minutes, the Cavaliers were lifeless and lost.

Indians sign ex-Raptor Santana to 5-year deal

CLEVELAND -- Two days after his birthday, Carlos Santana got a precious gift -- financial security.

Cleveland's talented catcher signed a five-year, $21 million contract with the Indians, who locked up another "cornerstone" player they believe is only beginning to tap into his potential.

For the 26-year-old Santana who started his pro career with the Ogden Raptors, the deal provides peace of mind.

NBA lockout hitting some cities hard

CLEVELAND -- Across the street from Quicken Loans Arena, a building that rocks and rolls from November until April as home to the Cavaliers, reality is posted on a wall.

Harry Buffalo is one of the downtown restaurants in Cleveland that counts heavily on the beer-drinking, burger-devouring NBA crowd to keep its doors open. Operations manager John Adams has taped an internet report outside the kitchen for his waitresses, bartenders and cooks to read.

With no NBA, Cavs' Irving hits books, treats foot

WESTLAKE, Ohio -- Kyrie Irving left college after one year to play in the NBA.

He's back in school.

It's all the No. 1 overall draft pick can do during the lockout, and Cleveland's rookie point guard has no idea when he'll start his real job.

Softball stars not playing for U.S. team

CLEVELAND -- Jessica Mendoza traveled the world playing tournaments and in two Olympics for the powerful U.S. softball team.

That decade-long journey, for now, is over.

Mendoza, a two-time Olympic medalist, and seven of her teammates from the 2008 Beijing Games, will not play for Team USA this year, opting to play professionally instead in hopes of growing a sport dropped from the Olympic program.

LeBron sees 'karma' in Cavs' 55-point loss

CLEVELAND -- LeBron James has tweaked Dan Gilbert -- and the Cavaliers owner's miserable NBA team -- with a pointed tweet.

As James' former teammates were absorbing a 55-point loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night, the player fired off a message on his Twitter account that seemed to be directed at Gilbert.

James wrote: "Crazy. Karma is a b

Sloan ties Riley for 3rd on wins list

CLEVELAND -- Jerry Sloan didn't boast about his latest win. It's not his style.

Anyway, he didn't brag about the previous 1,209, so he wasn't about to start.

Sloan moved into a tie with Pat Riley for the third-most coaching wins in NBA history on Monday night, climbing the chart as CJ Miles scored 22 points and Paul Millsap and Raja Bell added 19 apiece to pace the Jazz to a 101-90 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

USA's Schuffenhauer detained by police

WHISTLER, British Columbia — Alone in the back of an empty truck used to transport bobsleds, Bill Schuffenhauer buried his head in his arm and cried.

This was not the Olympic moment he had in mind.
