Prep football: Lancers snag victory but Warriors on rise

PLEASANT VIEW -- Unfortunately for Weber there are no MV's (moral victories) in the standings, just W's and L's. Friday night, the Warriors dropped their Region 1 opener 24-21 to Layton in front of a raucous homecoming crowd while playing arguably their best game of the year.

But a loss is still a loss.

"The kids fought hard all night and did a lot of good things," said Weber coach Rick Corbridge. "They worked hard and came to play ball."

Prep football: Wasps sting Scots with lopsided win

OGDEN -- Fresh off an emotional win in last week's season opener, Ben Lomond came crashing down to reality Friday night against Wasatch. The Wasps thwarted the Scots' hopes of stringing together back-to-back wins for the first time in three years, with a lopsided 36-0 victory at McAllister Field.

"We had a lot of distractions, and quite frankly, we were flat all week," said Ben Lomond coach Don Kenyon. "One of our keys coming into the game was to get pressure on their quarterback, and we weren't able to do that."

The Scots' inability to get pressure on Wasatch quarterback James Delacenserie proved to be their downfall. Delacenserie was a virtual one-man wrecking crew for the Wasps as he threw for four touchdown passes and ran for another.

Prep football: Scots open Kenyon era with home win

OGDEN -- A new era of Ben Lomond football officially began Friday night with the Scots accomplishing something they hadn't done in two years -- win. The emotionally charged Scots scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to come from behind to defeat the Union Cougars 14-6 in a thrilling season opener for both squads.

Both Ben Lomond scores came on fourth down Alex Craft to Malcom Shipman touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. The first from 14 yards out with 6:38 remaining that gave B.L. the lead, and the second, a 32 yarder with one minute left on the clock clinched the outcome.

Prep football: 2010 is ancient history to Scots

OGDEN -- Enough is enough. As far as first-year coach Don Kenyon is concerned, last season is ancient history. There's a new attitude at Ben Lomond, this year, and it's all about winning.

The Scots will enter the 2011 campaign with a streak they would just assume not talk about -- 17 straight losses over the past two years and a winless (0-9) 2010 season.

Prep football: With little experience, Warriors depend on athleticism

PLEASANT VIEW -- Experience can sometimes be overrated. But that's exactly what the Weber Warriors are going to have to rely on if they expect to compete in arguably the toughest region in the state.

"I don't think competing will be a problem for us," said second-year coach Rick Corbridge. "I see our region as probably the toughest in the state, certainly at least one of the top two. We will definitely have our hands full each week, and there won't be an easy one on our schedule. But it will be nice to not jump into league play right away."

Prep basketball: Mustangs take down Warriors in thriller

PLEASANT VIEW -- Friday night's game between Mountain Crest and Weber was a statistical nightmare for both coaches, but in the end the Mustangs found a way to win ugly.

Prep football: Knights turn back Warriors, finish 3rd in Region 1

PLEASANT VIEW -- They say that scoreboards never lie, but that don't always tell the whole truth either. Case in point: Northridge's 41-13 shellacking of Weber High Friday night.

Prep football: Trojans rough up host Scots

OGDEN -- You can sum up Morgan High's performance Friday night against Ben Lomond in just two words: complete dominance. There was no stopping the Trojans who rolled to a lopsided 55-7 victory at Ben Lomond's McAllister Field.

Prep football: Weber denies Roy 2nd win in romp

PLEASANT VIEW -- You can pick any number of reasons why Weber High waltzed its way to a convincing 43-0 homecoming victory over Roy High Friday night, and any one of them would be legitimate. But when it came right down to it, it was the performance of the Warriors offensive line, the down-and-dirty guys who rarely get the recognition they deserve, that made Friday night's victory a cake walk.

Under first-year coach, Weber faces a daunting legacy

PLEASANT VIEW -- First-year Weber High coach Rick Corbridge finds himself with an unenviable task -- improve on the Warriors' best record in a decade.

The good news is there is room for improvement, but not much.

Raptors continue to feast on Helena Brewers

OGDEN -- Scheduling more games with the Helena Brewers isn't going to happen, but you can't blame the Ogden Raptors for wishing so.

Larsen takes over at Weber

PLEASANT VIEW -- After five years as an assistant at Weber High, Mark Larsen will moving over a seat on the sidelines as the new head coach of Warriors basketball. Larsen succeeds Chad Sims, who compiled an overall record of 43-66 during that span.

Two Ogden event runners also battling cancer

OGDEN -- For Kim Ulmer and Nick Raitt, Saturday's 10th annual Zions Bank Ogden Marathon was more than a competition against the field, it was a race with a cause against a menacing foe -- cancer.
