You say habit like it's a bad thing!

Everybody has things that they do that they quickly make a habit out of -- and not all of them are very good. Things like chewing on your fingernails, procrastinating homework, being way too competitive, or even being very unobservant and tripping all the time over nothing.

Habits are formed all the time out of boredom, or nervousness, or to think, or just for plain fun. High school students around the Top of Utah admit to a variety of bad habits.

Personally, I chew my fingernails. I am always being told to stop, but that is only when I'm forced.

Artistic makeup: If you can dream it, you can do it

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, at least to some that is.

A form of beauty, a form of art, makeup can be so much more than what you watched your mom put on before she'd go out for the day. And is it a skill? Is it a talent? Or is it the mind?

The face is a blank canvas. The makeup is your paint, and you are the artist. Now to create the works of art, do you have to be Michelangelo or can you be a child with a dream? To me, makeup -- special effects makeup -- can show a new world to those who see it.

I survived 'Dead Week'

It took a couple of glances at the clock for the time to really sink in: 3 o'clock. A.M. And my project was finally finished. I sent it to the professor, slept for a few hours, and then had to get up for school.

And that night, I stayed up until 1:30 a.m. -- outlining notes on flashcards and reading the text from my psychology book for the last test of the semester.

The next night, midnight. And so it went on, and on, and on ... until finals week was finally over.

Now, I'm sure most of you are pretty much like, "Come on, Charlie.

Doing things the hard way rewarding

"Now, easier than ever before!"

How many times have you heard that phrase? What about, "Come on, it's easy," or "There's never been anything easier!"

And it's true, in today's society many things are easier than ever before. People are continually inventing new products and technologies to make our lives "easier," nifty inventions like pre-shredded cheese, retractable Sharpie markers, smart boards and the express lane on the freeway.

My parents had to check out books in the library to write research papers. I flip on the computer and plug in a search word.

Rock your hobby

The end of the school year is fast approaching and between homework, classes and year-end exams, it can feel like there isn't time for anything else.

So how do Top of Utah teens spend those few precious moments of free time?

For Danielle Wall, a senior at Morgan High School, those moments are full of activities, her favorite being scuba diving.

"My friends and I thought it would be fun and one day we just decided to do it, so we went and got certified, and ever since we go whenever we have free time," Wall says.

Becoming certified takes hard work, but Wall fi

Hollywood Undead know how to put on a show

The Cinco de Mayo Concert at the Great Saltair featured two stages, one indoors and one outside, so at almost any point in the concert you could walk in or out of Saltair and hear a different band.

The stage inside featured Drowning Men, Middle Class Rut and Flogging Molly, while the outdoor stage featured Brogan Kelby, New Medicine, Drive A, 10 years and -- the band I came to see -- Hollywood Undead.

As a concert venue, the Great Saltair has an interesting past, opening its doors for the first time in 1893.

No regret at being swept up in modern fairy tale

It's infectious, intoxicating, you can't help but be swept up in the glorious story that Kate Middleton and Prince William are living!

OK, I admit, I have allowed myself to get a bit swept up by this amazing modern fairy tale -- I can't help it. It truly is a fairy tale. I mean, honestly, I couldn't write a better love story if I tried!

I stayed up all night -- yes, all night -- to watch the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. I know that sounds crazy and being honest with myself here, it is crazy, but let me explain my logic.

Get ready, get set, test!

Brows furrowed in concentration, pencils poised to fill in bubble sheets, test booklets open to the first page.

Is this your typical high school pop quiz? You wish. It's actually the ACT, the standardized test most colleges and universities in the western United States require of potential students.

Most kids take the ACT their junior or senior year of high school, and the great thing is you can take this test as many times as you want till you get the score you're aiming for.

But you could take the ACT 20 times and get the same score, right?

Day spent hoping to silence prejudice

Sit back and enjoy the silence!

On April 22, the halls of Ben Lomond High School were a bit quieter as some students participated in the National Day of Silence. In the 1950s, we saw a civil rights movement with blacks; today, it is happening with gays and it is very hard for some people to go through. Living in the conservative state of Utah makes it even harder to be openly gay.

In February, I received an invitation to participate in the National Day of Silence.

Yes, now I know I can do anything I set my mind to

After months of training, the day of my half marathon had arrived.

I'm not quite sure how to describe my exact emotions but I was beyond excited. A long time ago, I wrote a goal list of things to do with my life like graduate from college, get married, watch all the Harry Potter movies without a break -- and run a half marathon.

Yet I never really thought I could do the race. I didn't think I was brave enough, strong enough or determined enough. Well, I guess it's safe to say I proved myself wrong.

The April morning dawned dreary and rainy.

If you don't buy into the whole idea there are alternatives

With all the hype about prom from peers, magazines and even movies, it is easy to think that if you don't attend this dance there is nothing for you to do except stay home and think of fellow students that are dancing the night away in over-priced dresses and crowded ballrooms.

Whether you didn't get asked to prom or chose not to go, there is more to do than be bored. Try any of these ideas to ensure a fun prom-free night.

* Have a movie marathon. It can be comedy, romance, horror, or any genre you like.

Prom: Annual high school dance big on tradition

Prom: Annual high school dance big on tradition

When many teenagers hear the word "tradition," Thanksgiving at Grandma's or history class comes to mind, not prom. However, the one-night dance party has a surprisingly cultural past.

Originating in the early 19th century, prom was a form of a debutante ball. Wealthy families would host extravagant parties for their young as a way of introducing them to society, a coming of age of sorts. Guests would arrive by carriage, dressed in their finest apparel, eager to partake in the buzzing atmosphere of the social gathering.

Prom: Even our parents enjoyed participating

Everyone dreams about their own prom story.

We fill it with elegant, fancy dresses that glitter a rainbow under the dance lighting. We have formal tuxedos and strapping young men with silk ties all entangled in our perfect perception. We have extravagant day dates, activities and exquisite dinners. Then we finally head to the Utah State Capitol and dance the night away.

This is the picture we paint of prom but the masterpiece hasn't always looked this way.

The Chow Truck stopped recently at Research Park at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

Different kinds of meals on wheels

When is a restaurant not a restaurant? If you're a "foodie," it's when your next meal is part of the food-truck revolution.

Let's differentiate the various types of street-food vendors; there are your small mobile carts -- think taco or hot dog cart; there are seasonal stands, like snow cones, chestnuts or fruit stands; there are booths, like at farmer's markets; and, finally, up the proverbial food chain, there is a food truck.

Arts teach more than drawing

One lecture from my world civilization teacher changed my whole outlook on everything.

Now, all my life I've always liked being creative. Art class was fun; being able to color and paint without being in trouble was a dream. But never did I know that classes like these aren't only fun, but enrich our society and can save America from the troubles it's facing. So why then do school districts and the government cut art programs first?
