So long, high school; hello, world

For the past year, our TX. seniors have made contributions to their schools, communities and the TX section every Monday.

Now, post graduation, it is time for them to start making different contributions to the world in other areas. But first, let’s see where some of our senior staff members have been with our annual Senior Spotlight and find out where they are going in the future.

What high school did you go to and what was your favorite thing about it?

Summer reading recommendations

Summer is an excellent time to fit some reading in, freed from the daily round of “go to school, do homework, sleep, repeat.”

However, with the sheer amount of reading material available, it’s difficult to choose the best books. Some of our TX. writers have therefore offered their personal favorites for summer reading.

From “1984” on, dystopia is a highly popular genre.

Savannah Rice, a sophomore at Weber High School, suggests a modern twist on the subject: “I would recommend ‘Divergent’ by Veronica Roth. It’s a dystopian novel, perfect for anyone who likes ‘The Hunger Games’ and the like. It’s suspenseful and is the perfect mix of action and romance.”

The flavors of gelato range from pistachio to tiramisu to mango and dark chocolate.

TRENDING WITH TX: Sweet treats; dinner at Zucca; new Outlook

Indulge your taste buds in a new creamy confection or enjoy dining out in a new tucked-away restaurant.

Here’s our latest installment of Trending With TX., a look at all sorts of things our Top of Utah teens are enjoying or discovering. If you have a suggestion for a future subject, please email us at tx@standard.net.

Lizzie and Mr. Darcy

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”

Thanks for the memories, summer 2012

The end of summer means putting away the comfy shorts and flip-flops.

But thanks to the memories preserved in physical and mental “postcards” of our summer vacations, we can keep the memories of our travels alive. We asked six Top of Utah students to share their experiences from their 2012 trips and here’s what we found:

Pick fun flicks for DIY drive-in

WATCH A TRAILER FOR 'AQUAMARINE'

Instead of hunting down a drive-in, make the drive-in come to you this summer.

Put up a screen in your backyard, pop a little popcorn and you’ve the makings of a great night under the stars in your own outdoor movie theater.

What to watch? Our TX. staff rustled up some of their favorite movies for the big screen that just scream summer.

It's your concert -- dream if you want to

Summer nights are nearly upon us and that means vibes for great summer concerts cannot be far behind.

What's better, after all, than settling down at sunset on a lawn somewhere to listen to your all-time favorite singer or hot band crank out a few tunes?

Today we offer Our Concert Picks, the artists some of our TX. staff members would most like to see perform in Utah during the summer of 2012 -- and the ideal venues where they'd like to see them in concert. Check it out and see if your favorite is on their list.

2011: The good, the bad and the ugly

We were swept up in the real-life drama of an earthquake in Japan and then in an on-screen drama battling He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named,

Along the way we also dressed up in feathers, laughed at the antics of a silly panda, and hummed along to some terrific tunes.

These were some of the memorable moments of 2011, a year now left behind for the history books. Our TX. staff weighed in on their picks for our annual Best & Worst survey -- and here's how they voted.

And this year's O'scares go to ...

If you love the chills and thrills of Halloween, read on to discover what our TX. writers have to say about some of the most creep-tastic attractions in the Top of Utah.

Whether you are going on a date, with your friends, or with your family, these Halloween haunts are sure to give you the heebie-jeebies. Prepare to be tangled in nets, lost, alone, hindered by obstacles or chased by chain saw-wielding psychos.

Here are our annual TX. O'Scares awards for 2011.

Grads say bye-bye to TX

The journey through high school has come to an end -- and new adventures await.

As the class of 2011 hangs graduation tassels on mirrors everywhere, it's a time for looking back and reflecting but also a time for dreaming new dreams.

We asked our graduating TX.

Best of times, worst of times

You sit down and pull out your notebook, turning to face the front of class. How could biology get any better? You get to sit next to your best friend and your biology teacher not only makes sense, but also makes things entertaining.

But what happens when the stress sets in? How do you continue to look on the bright side? Although some people look at the new school year positively, other students see some downsides.
