MOSCOW -- Russia's top investigative agency filed new charges Thursday against police officers accused of torturing detainees amid growing public outrage over police brutality.

The Investigative Committee said it had charged four officers in the Siberian city of Novokuznetsk in the torture death of a detainee. It also leveled new accusations against a police officer in the Volga River city of Kazan who is already in custody on charges of torturing a man to death.

MOSCOW — Vladimir Putin scored a decisive victory in Russia’s presidential election Sunday to return to the Kremlin and extend his hold on power for six more years. His eyes brimming with tears, he defiantly proclaimed to a sea of supporters that they had triumphed over opponents intent on “destroying Russia’s statehood and usurping power.”

Researchers complete 520-day mock mission to Mars

MOSCOW -- Pale but smiling, an international crew of researchers on Friday walked out of a set of windowless modules after a grueling 520-day simulation of a flight to Mars.

The all-male crew of three Russians, a Frenchman, an Italian-Colombian and a Chinese slowly emerged from the western Moscow facility, which simulated the confinement, stress and fatigue of interplanetary travel -- minus the weightlessness. Dressed in blue track suits emblazoned with the mission emblem, they carefully walked down a metal ladder to a greeting crowd of officials and journalists.

MOSCOW -- Police will track down and punish the hooligans and racists who rampaged in Moscow this weekend, President Dmitry Medvedev declared, warning that Russia itself could be torn apart if seething ethnic tensions spin out of control.

About 5,000 people, mainly boys and young men, rallied for hours on a square just outside the Kremlin, chanting "Russia for Russians!" as well as an obscene slur against people from Russia's Caucasus region. They brutally beat some dark-skinned passers-by, and when police moved against the demonstrators, rioting broke out that injured more than 30 people.
