Many executive orders, legislation are unconstitutional

Editor,

Communist dictator Vladimir Lenin stated: “The scientific concept of dictatorship means nothing else but this: power without limit, resting directly upon force, restrained by no laws, absolutely unrestricted by rules.” The tyrannical dictatorship Lenin described is what our country would be like without the restrictions and boundaries the Constitution placed against our government.

State can refuse to enforce unconstitutional laws

Editor,

Does congressional legislation in harmony with the Constitution supersede state laws? Yes! They automatically become part of the “supreme law of the land,” and consequently, supersede all state laws to the contrary. But when the checking power of the three federal branches don’t prevent laws that exceed their constitutional limitations, the Founders reserved to the states the power to nullify them by refusing to enforce them within their states.

Second Amendment prohibits regulation of any gun

Editor,

After the Connecticut school massacre, the December 18 "Our View: Massacre demands safety solutions," offered suggestions for safer schools, and called for "answers and solutions from Congress," but the Second Amendment prohibits Congress to regulate firearms of any kind; under any circumstances. All criminal abuse of firearms, including murder, falls under the capable jurisdiction of state legislatures.

Gun control a greater threat than criminals

Editor,

The recent United Nations Arms Trade Treaty conference for global gun control failed to achieve consensus, which would have "authorized" the U.N to regulate firearms of every nation that signed it, including America (if passed by the Senate), despite the Second Amendment of the Constitution, under the pretext of protecting citizens from criminals. It would have obligated those nations to create national firearms registries and establish collection methods for firearms not owned by government forces. The treaty authority of the Senate granted by the Constitution does not include giving away the American people’s constitutionally protected civil rights.

Public charity not an enumerated power of Congress

Editor,

Contrary to the writer’s interpretation in the September 18 "Viewpoint" commentary, the "general welfare" clause of the Constitution does not authorize federal welfare programs (Vijay Mathur, "Ryan’s muddled thoughts are of Rand, Hayek"). Actually, it forbids them by prohibiting Congress to show favoritism toward one state, county, city, or special interest group over another, including the rich or poor, with federal funds. Like the term "common defense" (same clause), it means that every American citizen must benefit equally and impartially.

Unregulated, free market produces economic prosperity

Editor,

In support of Obama’s presidential campaign, former President Clinton has criticized efforts to deregulate our economy. He blames deregulation for the economic problems in this country. History has proven that when the free market has been unleashed from government regulations, economic prosperity has exploded. Following World War II, a sharp reduction in government spending and controls sparked an economic boom that defied conventional wisdom.

Congress lacks authority to pass laws to limit guns

Editor,

The writer of the Aug. 5 "Viewpoints" commentary, "Grenades don’t kill people, people kill people" is mistaken in the belief that Congress and the Supreme Court have the authority to limit citizens’ ownership of certain firearms, contrary to the intent of the Second Amendment which states, "The right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

His stated opposition to "commitment to the Second Amendment" exposed his lack of respect for the Constitution and the rule of law. If the government is not strictly bound by constitutional laws, it is above the law and an unaccountable dictatorship, and our divinely inspired Constitution is meaningless.

Gun control has preceded military dictatorships

Editor,

The May 26 "Viewpoints" commentary, "Trust me: you believe in gun control," by Tina Dupuy, had several fatal flaws. "The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed," is not just an NRA "slogan;" it's in the Constitution.

Federal Reserve seeks control of world's finances

Editor,

In the March 1 guest commentary by John Reynolds, "The inconvenience of economic ignorance," Reynolds stated, "When it comes to 'economic ignorance'... no one can hold a candle to U.S. Rep. Ron Paul.... He seems obsessed with bringing down economic institutions and returning to the 'gold standard.'"

The writer was misinformed. Congressman Paul is a brilliant Austrian Economics scholar and champion of a free market; the only economic system that, like the "gold standard," is in harmony with the Constitution. Despite his perfect voting record of defending the Constitution, his campaign has been sabotaged by the neo-con, RINO (Republican-in-name-only) and left-wing establishment media, propaganda. Paul has been labeled "too radical.' Iowa's governor said he would ignore their primary results if Paul won, as Maine did.

Nation's problems not caused by constitutional defects

Editor,

The Feb. 15 "Viewpoints" commentary by John Reynolds, "Is the Constitution 'antiquated?'" questioned the wisdom of the Constitution in today's world. He said, "It's tough being a 'constitutionalist'.... You must study the relevant documents including the Constitution, Bill of Rights and amendments and understand them." Of course! Thomas Jefferson warned: "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free ... it expects what never was and never will be."

Proposed act will allow military to arrest anyone

Editor,

President Obama recently signed the National Defense Authorization Act to allow the U.S. military to arrest and detain anyone indefinitely, even Americans he suspects of terrorist activities or assistance, without "due process", in violation of the Fifth and Sixth Amendments of the Constitution. "No person ... shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of the law", a "speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury", etc. It also violates the Geneva Convention Treaty that guarantees "due process" and humane treatment to foreign prisoners.

Following Constitution would undermine party system

Doug Gibson's December 25, "Viewpoint" column: "Book 'Latter Day Liberty,' may spark an LDS debate over politics," was interesting. Doug noted that the "book" was written by Libertarian activist, Connor Boyack. He added: "The book's arguments are heavily infused with Latter-day-Saint scriptures and quotes from the past Latter-day-Saint leaders," which includes Ezra Taft Benson, David O. McKay, and J. Rueben Clark. These leaders were known for supporting and "befriending" the Constitution in obedience to the Doctrine & Covenants (98:6).

Obama seems more tyrannical than Bush

(UNEDITED) As a presidential candidate, Barack Obama criticized President Bush's unconstitutional "military commissions" trials for terror suspects. As President, he continued Bush's policy of detaining them indefinitely, and torturing them without trial, or charges, in violation of the Fifth, Sixth, and Eighth Amendments of the Constitution: "No person [including terror suspects] ... shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of the law", "habeas corpus", a "speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury", "counsel for his defense", or receive "cruel and unusual punishment", etc., even during wartime. Both administrations denied these rights to military prisoners, including American civilian whistleblowers, like torture victims, Donald Vance (for 97 days), and terrorist suspect, Robert Arar (for 3 years). Both won federal lawsuits.

Merging government with business corrupts free market

(UNEDITED) Some current presidential candidates claim that their success as businessmen makes them better qualified to be president. Economic problems have never been because of the lack of businessmen in any administration. Government cannot be run according to business principles. Business and politics don't mix without politicizing and corrupting the free market. Such mergers are the essence of fascism/socialism. When socialist economies inevitably become stagnant, socialists incorrectly blame free-market capitalism.

War-mongering presidents enforce will of the U.N.

(UNEDITED) When President Obama was Senator Obama; he argued: "The president [Bush] does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation." Obama was right then, but wrong now: "Our mission in Libya is clear and focused ... we are enforcing the mandate of the United Nations Security Council." Libya is no "actual or imminent threat" to America. We have not been attacked by Gadhafi or the rebels.
