Women detainees claim they were shackled while pregnant

CHICAGO -- A federal judge on Tuesday granted preliminary approval to a $4.1 million settlement of a class-action lawsuit brought on behalf of a group of female detainees at the Cook County Jail who claimed they were shackled while they were pregnant and in labor, despite a state law banning the practice.

NATO summit brings out protesters

CHICAGO -- For several hours on a muggy Sunday, police and protesters coexisted more or less as it was drawn up on the city permit: demonstrators rallied in Grant Park, then marched south to Michigan Avenue and Cermak Road.

But after the anti-war speeches were done, and the military veterans had disavowed their war medals, protesters had a decision to make: stay or go.

Black clergy debate Obama's stand on gay marriage

CHICAGO -- The leader of President Barack Obama's former church in Chicago has come out against statements by other African-American clergy who condemned the president's endorsement last week of same-sex marriage.

co-workers sue lottery winners

CHICAGO -- Two employees of a Chicago Heights bakery are suing co-workers, saying they are being cut out of a share of the winnings from a recent $118 million Mega Millions jackpot.

According to the suit, Jose L. Franco and Marco Medina were regular participants in a lottery pool with about a dozen other co-workers for about the last year.

Boost your well-being with these yoga poses

CHICAGO -- Ingrid Yang turned to yoga a dozen years ago as a way to deal with injuries she suffered as a distance runner.

"When I started stretching and doing some strength training -- not with weights, but with my own body weight -- I noticed I was becoming injured less and less," Yang says of her introduction to yoga.

Soon after, she started teaching yoga, eventually owning her own studio and teaching classes on both coasts. Yang has also, with co-author Daniel Dituro, recently released the book "Hatha Yoga Asanas."

Josh Hamilton's contract situation most unique

You have to hand it to Josh Hamilton. While he's constantly on guard against his personal demons, he somehow still seems to be exactly what we want all athletes to be -- a big kid playing a child's game.

Mom’s ‘God boxes’ bless the gift of letting go

The day after her mother died, with the house surreally silent, Mary Lou Quinlan reached to the highest shelf of her mom’s Fort Myers, Fla., bedroom closet and discovered the “God boxes.”

Governor backs gay marriage in Illinois

CHICAGO -- A day after President Barack Obama endorsed equal marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn made it clear that he stands with the president on the politically divisive issue of marriage equality.

Grumet, a stay-at-home mom in Los Angeles who says her mother breastfed her until she was 6 years old, told the magazine in an interview that she's given up reasoning with strangers who see her son nursing and threaten “to call social services on me or that it's child molestation." Some think Time magazine cover sucks

The cover of the latest Time magazine illustrates a story about 72-year-old pediatrician Dr. William Sears with a photo of a nearly 4-year-old boy standing and suckling at the breast of his 26-year-old mother.

Headline: "Are you mom enough?"

Francena is readied for the CAT scan, Thursday, April 19, 2012 in Brookfield, Illinois. Three of Brookfield Zoo's eight Mexican gray wolves were examined tip to tail by the veterinary staff and consultants for a study of the occurrence of nasal carcinoma in the wolves. The three four-year-old females had their eyes, teeth and blood examined and had CAT scans of their head. (Chuck Berman/Chicago Tribune/MCT)

Saving the Mexican gray wolf a study in genetics

CHICAGO -- It is not a scene you expect to witness: a wolf, out cold, immobilized, its feral snout inside the giant doughnut ring of a high-tech medical device.

It's also striking purely on the level of language: a canine in a CAT scan. The Brookfield Zoo recently used the internal imaging technology common in human medicine to check its eight Mexican gray wolves for nose cancer.

Shooting with high arc serves Bulls Boozer well

CHICAGO -- Carlos Boozer grew up watching tapes of Karl Malone, a big man with a soft touch.

Study shows you're more likely to overeat when you are sleepy.

Sleepy? Study shows you're more likely to overeat

Here's a new spin on the saying, "If you snooze you lose."

What if the "lose" part applied to your weight? No, it's not as simple as going to sleep and waking up slimmer. Alas.

But a recent Harvard study does suggest that people who get a good night's rest find it easier to resist overeating -- especially when it comes to gorging on high-calorie foods like ice cream, cheeseburgers or French fries.

We all know the temptation: You're drowsy during the day, get hungry and head to the snacks aisle or a vending machine for junk food or a candy bar.

Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin perform a sketch on the live episode of “30 Rock” spoofing the classic television series “The Honeymooners.”

Lessons 'SNL' can learn from live '30 Rock'

CHICAGO -- Here's a question: What, if anything, can "Saturday Night Live" learn from the live episode of "30 Rock" that recently aired?

When "30 Rock" broadcast its first live episode in 2010, the experiment was interesting in theory, disappointing in practice. But credit to the sitcom's creators for cooking up another effort. Not because it was one of the show's best outings. It wasn't. But it was an intriguing example of what a live sketch comedy show could -- and, I would argue, should -- be attempting to do from week to week.

Visitors to Badlands National Park can witness a naturally occurring color palette of pinks and yellows on the rock faces as they drive the scenic loop route.

A good time in the Badlands

What would I do with a five-day mini-getaway? Let's see, maybe New York City, San Francisco, Miami or -- South Dakota? Lets be honest, the Mount Rushmore State doesn't generally come to mind when thinking "vacation." But after seeing a photo of Badlands National Park in the book "501 Must-Visit Natural Wonders," I changed my mind.

The National Park Service describes the South Dakota Badlands as one of the plan-et's fastest-eroding landscapes. What you see today will in some way be different tomorrow. The Badlands also are a geological gem boasting a poetic blend of simple grandiosity and rugged natural beauty. The never-ending dance of deposition and erosion is what makes the Badlands remind us of the age of the planet and the truth behind the saying "Nothing lasts forever."

Gale Sayers says Rose must be patient

CHICAGO -- For Gale Sayers, the devastating injury to Derrick Rose brought back painful memories.

In a 1968 game against the 49ers at Wrigley Field, the Bears halfback took a pitch out from quarterback Virgil Carter. Sayers planted his right leg to make a cut, but 49ers cornerback Kermit Alexander lunged at the leg to make the tackle. Sayers' knee buckled.
