Manchester United's Ferguson says he wants to stay for 2-3 years

LONDON -- Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he wants to carry on as manager of the English champions for another two to three years.

In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, to be broadcast later on Monday, the 70-year-old said he would like an ambassadorial role with the club after he retires.

LONDON -- Preparations continue apace six months ahead of the 2012 London Olympics with organizers promising the right balance will be struck between security and sport at the world's largest sporting event.

However, London's citizens remain to be convinced, not least because of last week's huge security exercise which saw the United Kingdom's elite military and police forces take command of the River Thames as part of their preparations for protecting the event against terrorist attack.

Record number of doping tests at London Olympics, Paralympics

LONDON -- A record 6,250 doping tests will be carried out at the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, organizers said on Thursday at the unveiling of the Games' anti-doping laboratory.

The lab in Harlow, Essex, will see around 150 scientists examine the samples from the athletes, with the shortest turnover given at 24 hours. The whole anti-doping process will involve around 1,000 people, the organizing committee LOCOG said.

Russian ice hockey official says Lokomotiv Yaroslavl will play again

MOSCOW -- Ice hockey fans wore team colors and lit candles in the provincial Russian town Yaroslavl, where a community has been devastated by a plane crash that killed most of the players for the local ice hockey side.

Talk was of how much the dead would be missed -- and of rebuilding.

One day after a deadly plane crash killed 36 Lokomotiv players and staff, and seven air crew members, thousands of flowers -- most in bouquets of red or white carnations -- crammed the Arena 2000's main entrance.
