Jared Parker feeds cattle with his sons Ty, Waylon, and Virgil at their farm, Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, in Logan, Utah. Lane Parker, who owns Logan River Ranch and the Smithfield Livestock Auction, said when the temperature drops to around zero degrees and stays there for an extended period of time, it can cause serious problems for farmers and ranchers. While every farmer uses different methods to care for their herds, the most important way to protect cows is to make sure they have plenty of food and water and dry bedding. Cows need more calories in order to stay warm in the winter months, so farmers need to be prepared to feed more. (AP Photo/The Herald Journal, Eli Lucero)

N. Utah ranchers deal with extreme cold

LOGAN — On Jan. 11, 2000, a windstorm blew through Blacksmith Fork Canyon and Mike Clawson lost half his herd of dairy cows in one night.

The cows didn’t die, said Clawson of Clawson and Sons Dairy in Hyrum, but they were damaged beyond repair. The icy wind caused more than 100 cows’ teats to freeze. Once this happens, scabs form, and milk can no longer be extracted.

Cache Valley moms churning out own baby food

LOGAN — If you buy a jar of banana baby food at the store, it may have interesting ingredients including citric acid, tuna oil, choline bitartrate, ascorbic acid, gelatin, alpha tocopheryl and acetate.

The banana baby food Danielle Schow feeds her daughter has one ingredient: bananas. That’s because she makes all her baby food herself.

Bananas are easy, since you can just mash them up with a fork. For other foods, Schow uses a BPA-free steamer, then blends them in a Baby Bullet small blender system that comes with baby food containers and recipe book.
