Rush Limbaugh joins Mark Twain in Missouri hall of fame

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Rush Limbaugh was officially inducted Monday into the Hall of Famous Missourians.

But Democrats are still hopeful his bronze bust will never be on display alongside those of Harry Truman, Mark Twain and Walt Disney.

'Boomerang' effect not so scary, kids and parents say

We parents of college students had better get the basements fixed up. According to none other than Karl Rove and his political action group, chances are better than eight in 10 that the kids will be hauling themselves and their ratty belongings back home after graduation.

American Crossroads is out with a political ad that disses President Barack Obama for being "cool." It shows him dishing with celebrities and quaffing a beer, and notes that "after four years of a celebrity president" half of college graduates can't find jobs that fit their skills, student debt has topped $1 trillion and -- OMG! -- 85 percent of recent college grads have been forced to move in with their parents.

I don't think this ad will phase college students, who tend to be optimistic about overcoming the obstacles mentioned. But parents, that's a different story. Eighty-five percent of college grads moving back home? You can see a shudder moving through the land.

Parents can stand down, however. PolitiFact, the fact-checking service of the Tampa Bay Times, examined the claim and pronounced it false.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Her face framed by a white scarf covering her head and hair -- considered "a private part" for Muslim women -- Susann Bashir grew sad Friday afternoon recalling her final encounter with a former boss.

Keys to paradise: Blue water, coral reefs, big saltwater fish, warm weather

ISLAMORADA, Fla. -- Charter captain George Coffey was steering his 25-foot boat across the aqua waters of the Florida Keys, heading for the place he calls "a fishing paradise."

Pilot’s meltdown puts spotlight on high-stress work environments

After a few workplace violence events in mail centers, "going postal" entered the lexicon.

This week, thanks to a widely shared newspaper headline about the in-flight meltdown of a JetBlue pilot, we got, "This is your captain freaking."

Though not particularly fair or nice, the shorthand descriptions of workplace outbursts are here to stay.

Many think Bales case reflects a military pushed to the limit

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- American soldiers in Afghanistan aren't supposed to drink booze. They're not supposed to stray "outside the wire" of their fortifications on their own.

And they aren't supposed to train their rifles on innocents.

Yet that's just what Army Staff Sgt.

Abortion records found in recycling bin

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An Overland Park, Kan., woman made a disturbing discovery Saturday as she dumped her recycling inside a yellow and green bin in front of Brookridge Elementary School: More than 1,000 private abortion records sat in plain view, dumped on top of magazines and newspapers in a possibly serious violation of federal privacy law.

Tourist destination Branson surveys damage

BRANSON, Mo. -- Trashed by a tornado that cruised its strip and blew the roofs of its hotels before moving on, this music Mecca is surveying what needs fixing before visitors arrive in two weeks.

While most of the shows will go on, the tourist area suffered damage amounting to many millions of dollars to theaters, strip malls, marinas, go-cart tracks, apartments and bass boats.

Tame horses being released to mix with wild herds

EMINENCE, Mo. -- From his pickup on a rise above the Current River, Bill Smith scanned the wild horses grazing below to see if all were members in good standing.

That's not always the case these days with Missouri's only wild horse herd, which descends from animals set free in the Great Depression by farmers who couldn't afford to feed them.

Because it's happening again in the Great Recession. Strapped owners are dumping horses in what is now the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, apparently thinking they will be warmly received by the wild bunch that runs the thousands of public acres along the Current and Jacks Fork rivers.

Legislator apologizes for 'YoMama' email about first lady

More trouble in Pakistan

It's important that a thorough investigation determine what happened in the recent NATO airstrike in a rugged border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

A joint American-Afghan patrol in Afghanistan began taking mortar and small-arms fire from Taliban fighters. The patrol apparently mistook a Pakistan border outpost for an insurgent detachment and called for help from the air. The airstrike took place at night, after the U.S.-Afghan patrol was told by the Pakistani army that it had no troops in the area. Two dozen Pakistani soldiers were killed.

Eddie Sutton: A country song kind of basketball life

"It brings back a flood of bad memories," Sutton said.

Memories of that snowy night nearly 11 years ago when a small plane carrying 10 members of the Cowboys' men's basketball program, including two players, crashed into a Colorado field. There were no survivors.

From 'mother hen' to media villain: The life of a missing baby's mom

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- He can't sleep. He has trouble focusing his thoughts or quieting roiling emotions after each news story about his missing granddaughter.

And baby Lisa Irwin's first birthday looms five days away.

"That's gonna be the oh-my-God moment," said David Netz Jr., weeping. "I can't even imagine what that day will be like. What will we do? How will we get through that? I don't even know how to ask Debbie and Jeremy what we should do or how to help them through that."

Since the mystifying Oct. 4 disappearance of the 10-month-old, much of the nation has been introduced to her parents, Debbie Bradley and Jeremy Irwin, as the latest breathless, blow-by-blow, cable-crime-case sensation.
