McGrath: Here's a tip -- get rid of silly baseball rules

Major League Baseball is making plans to ban something I call The Groan play. If the ban clears all the bureaucratic hurdles, it won't be a minute too soon.

It's time to take another look at lentils

You gotta love the lentil.

The small, lens-shaped legume lets its showy cousins, the bean and the pea, take the spotlight. But cooks the world over know that lentils are an easy and quick preparation with a unique flavor. This is a food that plays well with others.

From a nutritional standpoint, lentils are hard to beat. High in fiber and protein, they also are loaded with folic acid, iron, phosphorus and potassium, according to the Mayo Clinic. Lentils also are low on the glycemic index.

Why was Josh Powell never charged in wife’s disappearance?

TACOMA, Wash. — On Dec. 7, 2009, less than 24 hours after his wife, Susan, disappeared, Josh Powell lied over and over.

He lied to police in Utah. He lied to his sister. He lied to his wife’s friend. The next day, he lied to police again, appearing to hand over potential evidence even as he concealed it. A week later, he canceled his wife’s chiropractic appointments and withdrew all the money from her IRA accounts.

McGrath: Final Four offers Goodfellas, not Cinderellas

Like the other residents of Busted Bracketville, I've got no stake in the Final Four teams set to play in New Orleans.

McGrath: Tiger's no Navy SEAL ... nor is he an Einstein

Count me among the cynics whose cold shoulders shrugged upon learning that golf-swing guru Hank Haney planned to write a book about former pupil Tiger Woods.

More lurid details about Tiger as the serial romancer who seduced porn stars and pancake-house waitresses? No, thanks. I've heard all about it. At some point, he, and we, need to move on.

Man's other wife exposed when one 'friends' the other on Facebook

TACOMA, Wash. — Here’s a recipe for trouble:

A woman you left three years ago but remain married to gets a Facebook recommendation to "friend" a woman she doesn’t know. Unbeknown to her, you married the mystery woman after changing your name.

Pierce County Sheriff's deputies and Graham Firefighters work around the smoldering remains of a house near Fredrickson, Wash., Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, where, according to a sheriff's spokesman, three bodies were were found. The bodies are believed to be Josh Powell and his two sons. The explosion occurred moments after a Child Protective Services worker brought the two boys to the home for a supervised visit. House Josh Powell blew up was not his real residence

TACOMA, Wash. — The home Josh Powell showed to authorities in Graham, Wash., was nothing but a sham.

He did not live there. He did not keep his important things there.

And when he found he could not keep his children there he decided to blow it up.

Boling: Pac-12 teams prove detractors absolutely correct

Before the start of the basketball season, analysts projected weak performances out of Pacific-12 Conference squads. The teams proceeded to go out and prove their detractors absolutely right.

Anti-gay church cancels plan to protest at Powell boys’ funeral

TACOMA, Wash. — Westboro Baptist Church may not be coming for the Powell boys’ service after all. A Tweet sent from leader Fred Phelps Jr’s Twitter account says "Washington trip now cancelled."

911 response to call about family killer Josh Powell seems dense

Listening to the 911 tapes now, after we know what was about to happen at family killer Josh Powell's house, the 911 call takers seem agonizingly dense and rude.

They ask questions that seem bizarrely off point, constantly interrupting and speaking over callers as they try to explain themselves.

As Powell is about to strike his children with a hatchet and set his house on fire, a 911 call taker asks Powell's case worker, who is calling from her cell phone in the driveway in front of his house, "Are you in a vehicle now or on foot?"

Anti-gay church to protest funeral of Powell boys

A notoriously anti-gay church plans to picket Saturday's funeral for the brothers killed by their father, Josh Powell, and Occupy Seattle members plan a counter protest.

Trades load up MLS West with firepower

In the past week, the Portland Timbers signed Scottish Premier League all-time scoring leader Kris Boyd, the Vancouver Whitecaps traded for former MLS Best XI forward Sebastien Le Toux and the Los Angeles Galaxy brought back 2010 MLS Golden Boot runner-up Edson Buddle.

That's a lot of firepower clustered within the Western Conference of Major League Soccer.

Kyle Stanley learns valuable - and expensive - lesson

Strange how many are expressing sympathy for Kyle Stanley, as if he'd suffered through something more horrible Sunday than a valuable learning experience.

It was a high-profile one, of course, and an expensive one at that. But, on the upside, those tend to be the most effective.

The dramatic reversal of fortune that led the Gig Harbor, Wash., golfer to take second in the 2012 Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego is certainly not an event that will define his career.

McGrath: Fielder deal worthy of some weighty ridicule

Detroit Tigers owner Mike Ilitch ranked No. 238 on the 2010 Forbes Magazine "400 Richest Americans" list. Last year, the net worth of the fast-food magnate was estimated to be $1.7 billion.

A Marine veteran who played three seasons of minor league baseball after the service, Ilitch was not born wealthy. In 1959, he and his wife opened a pizza joint outside Detroit. The place eventually expanded into the Little Caesars chain that today serves customers everywhere from Guam to Turkey.

Given Ilitch's status as a self-made billionaire -- and mine as a bargain-hunting connoisseur of thrift shops -- I have no more room to criticize the man's business decisions than berate Brad Pitt's brand of sunglasses.

But, wow, that was one dumb deal Ilitch made Tuesday.
