Facebook has taken slams of its privacy policy to heart

In the past several weeks, Mark Zuckerberg has hit the road in anticipation of Facebook's public offering of stock. At the same time, the company's chief privacy officer, Erin Egan, led her own road show to help explain Facebook's revamped privacy policies.

Department of Workforce Services helps scores of Utahns find a job

While Utah's unemployment numbers continue to hover around six percent, well below the national average, The Utah Department of Workforce Services (DWS) is taking a closer look at whether they are making a difference.

In the May/June edition of their publication "Trendlines," WFS executive director Kristen Cox addresses this very question and with the data to back it up, concludes with a resounding yes.

Great leaders know how to communicate well

Famous entrepreneurs are known for communicating on a regular basis with employees, vendors, investors and clients.

They have learned it is a vital aspect of their business. Whether the news is positive or negative, they know it is best to be forthright, honest and timely. They know people appreciate transparency and truth.

Thoughtful leaders communicate via various meetings, speeches, emails, tweets and phone calls. They write blogs and articles, and deliver information via the media.

Strong mentors are a business builder's best friends

Expert advisers are a business builder’s best friends and resources. We might also call them coaches, teachers or mentors. They are people with specific expertise, knowledge and/or business relationships. They have learned the key principles and best practices of their trade. They think abundantly and are willing to share what they know with those who ask for assistance. They themselves have been taught by other luminaries and are delighted to “pay it forward.”

Smart and successful entrepreneurs continue to enlist advisers on a regular basis for instruction and wise counsel. They recognize that pretty much no one has all the right answers on their own about how to start and run a great business.

A mentor might be an attorney, a CPA, a supervisor from the past, a kind competitor, an angel investor, a banker or a successful entrepreneur. Most are happy to give assistance pro bono. They are generous with their advice, but cautious with their time. Savvy entrepreneurs respect this special gift and carefully manage the relationship.

Help your attorney bifurcate the legalese from the layman's

No one can understand what I say. I jokingly tell clients that if they could understand attorneys, it would be a lot harder for us to collect our fees.

Yet being an attorney is all about speaking a language that normal people don’t necessarily understand. The law aims for precision and specificity, but it often means confusion, even for the attorney.

When you are dealing with an attorney, the first thing you should do is immediately interrupt her (or him) if you don’t understand the words hitting your eardrums. I’ve been playing the lawyer game so long that words trip off my tongue and I don’t even realize that people have no idea what I’m saying. When you say, “based upon the DMI and liquidation analysis” often enough, you forget that it isn’t even human speech.

Jimmer and Jeremy try to make their (trade) marks

Recent actions by famous athletes, such as Jimmer Fredette and Jeremy Lin, to protect the market potential of their names were called to my attention by business associates who wanted to know what they could do to protect their name or nickname. The simple answer would be to seek a trademark, as Fredette and Lin have done, but dealing with personal names complicates the issue.

Over the last several years the United States Patent and Trademark Office has developed an attractive, user-friendly website (www.uspto.gov) containing an abundance of information about patents and trademarks.

Utilizing that website, I learned that Fredette filed an application on March 31, 2011, for use of the word "Jimmer" on posters, footwear, apparel and plastic toy figures.

The secret to success: Make sure your customers are happy

Successful business owners are focused on taking care of their customers. They wake up every day with buyers on their minds.

These entrepreneurs have worked long hours to win customers and now labor to retain and increase their buying activities. This attitude typifies the best entrepreneurs.

Intelligent business builders view customers as their lifeblood and greatly value loyal patrons. Entrepreneurs recognize that every dollar a client spends provides the revenue to cover expenses, produce a profit and keep them in business. They appreciate and respect the people who shop with them.

Alternative B for highway creates loss for many

Editor,

Look at the new UDOT plans for the Davis West Corridor: link

With Alternative B, the Antelope Drive interchange is like putting a square peg in a round hole. It just doesn't fit. Alternative B causes much more upset than moving this interchange just a mile or two west where land is undeveloped. Alternative B destroys quiet neighborhoods, Antelope Drive snakes around side to side, the walking trail appears to be gone, Freemont Park is made smaller and the freeway is right on top of the charter school.

The legislative branch has failed us in the mortgage crisis

Do you remember your sixth-grade civics class? Probably time for a refresher, especially before you go to vote in November.

The executive branch of government (president and governor) enforces the laws. The legislative branch (Congress and state Legislature) creates the laws. The judicial branch interprets the laws.

Why is this important? Understanding this basic division of labor among the branches of government will allow you to make more informed decisions as a citizen and understand where responsibility lies.

Job goals begin with lists

Setting the right goals can be critical to your job search success. Mike Taylor, a career counselor with the Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College, recently shared with me what he does to help students set career goals.

First, make a list of all the things you like to do. The list should be long and include everything you can think of, from building things with your hands to playing chess. The list does not have to include just things that relate directly to a potential job.

Business excellence requires a hearty helping of sacrifice

Every business builder I know has made sacrifices to start and grow their business. It’s a key characteristic of successful entrepreneurs. By definition, a sacrifice is the act of surrendering something highly valued for the sake of something of even greater importance.

The concept of relinquishing a prized object for a highly desirable reward is as old as time. In today’s business environment, owners find themselves in situations in which sacrifices are made with varying consequences.

Speaking with entrepreneurs, we learn they often miss their wedding anniversaries and their children’s ball games, dance recitals, birthday parties, parent-teacher conferences. Why? They are often traveling on these important occasions, conducting business on behalf of their company. As I look back on my experiences, there were nights when I came home from work after the children were in bed and I was too tired to even enjoy a bowl of soup for dinner. My wife, Jeanne, was generally home alone raising the children while I was trying to close a business deal.

Hatch not affiliated with Super Pac

Editor,

In regards to Alan Mortensen's letter of February 14th, regarding the mailer sent by Freedom Path attacking Dan Liljenquist's company sending

jobs to the Philippines, Mr. Mortensen can be "outraged" all he wants. However, Freedom Path is an independent political organization. Senator Orrin Hatch, nor his campaign, by law, cannot and did not have any knowledge or coordination with the mailing.

Digital biz: Word of mouth is your best friend and your worst enemy

In the world of marketing, word of mouth is still king.

It can make or break your business. This is especially true with the advent of social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, where people can instantly share their thoughts and feelings with hundreds and sometimes thousands of friends.

Every great business starts with a dream

All award-winning entrepreneurs have had a dream and followed it, turning their ideas into a commercial success.

There has never been a better time to follow your dream and turn it into a reality. Having a dream is the key, the starting point. Do you have that new product in mind? Are you ready to go? Then I say, full speed ahead. Go for it now!

Sadly, I have seen scores of individuals who have had a terrific idea but, for whatever reason, they were unable to follow the dream to start and grow a new enterprise. Whatever the reason, they never left the couch and the dream died.

N. Ogden councilman wants complex at lower price

Editor,

The people of North Ogden are being misled by the inaccurate reporting that is being printed in the Standard Examiner. Regarding North Ogden's city council meetings, the paper seems to have a bias in favor of business as usual and let's have the city leaders do what they want and spend as much as they want; keep the citizens in the dark. The Standard reported in January 30, article, "Public works complex mulled over," that Wade Bigler (city councilman) "strongly opposed building the City's public works complex with bond money. Anyone who knows what's going on in North Ogden realizes that Mr. Bigler has repeatedly stated that our public works facility does need to be upgraded, but that it can be done for much less than the $7-10 million proposed by the previous council.
