VFW convention to be held in Layton

LAYTON -- Military veterans from all over the state will gather in Layton to remember their past and discuss their future.

The Layton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8307 will host the annual VFW state convention with activities and meetings June 6-June 8 at the Courtyard by Marriott, 1803 Woodland Park Drive, Layton.

During the three-day convention, veterans will elect officers, discuss important veterans' issues, approve resolutions and host a fundraiser.

"It's a pretty big deal from a veteran's perspective," said Terry Schow, director of the Utah Department of Veterans Affairs. "It gives them an opportunity to become aware of all the veterans issues that are out there."

Schow, who will be a featured speaker at the convention, said one of the biggest issues for Utah veterans is the small number who are actually members in veterans organizations like the VFW or the American Legion.

The VFW will host a golf tournament at Swan Lakes June 6 to benefit AIDS and cancer research.

The convention will wrap up June 8 at the Layton Hills Mall, where at 2 p.m. veterans will hold a flag-raising.

The public is invited to the ceremony. For more information, call Lewis Tracy at 497-6771.

Ten volunteers are needed to help with the triathlon on June 14.
