Wednesday, July 9, 2008
Anastazia Neely, of Layton, is the recipient of a $1,500 college scholarship awarded through a program for the children of military personnel. She is the daughter of Roosevelt and Barbara Neely.
The Scholarships for Military Children Program began in 2000 to award scholarships to graduating high school seniors and college-enrolled students.
More than 5,000 students applied for the scholarships at commissary locations worldwide run by the Defense Commissary Agency.
Neely was awarded her scholarship through the Hill Air Force Base Commissary.
Among Neely's qualifications were her involvement in the National Honor Society, as vice president, student government service, speech and debate club membership, her activities as a cheerleader and on the city newspaper.
All applicants for the 2008 program were required to maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, participate in voluntary and school activities and to write an essay on "Every able-bodied citizen should be required to serve for a two-year period of time in the military -- Why or Why Not?"
All scholarships in the program are funded through businesses or promotions through the Defense Commissary Agency program.
Neely's scholarship was funded through the generosity of Brach's Confections.
The Fisher House Foundation administers the Scholarships for Military Children Program through Scholarship Managers, a professional scholarship management services organization.
Fisher House is known for building military comfort homes near military medical facilities.
Neely plans to use her scholarship at Hampton University.
