Blogs, forums and route planner features designed to enhance training experience

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- Participants in the 12th annual USAF Marathon now have the opportunity to interact online to ask questions, share opinions and news and plan training routes for the Sept. 20 event. Through a partnership with realbuzz.com, the USAF Marathon recently launched its online community at www.usafmarathon.com, placing it in a group of the first road races in the country to do so.

The USAF Marathon's online community now features blogs, forums and route planners to help enhance the training and race preparation experience for each athlete. These features are also available for participants who are interested in registering for the Half Marathon, 10K Individual, and 5K races and will be a good way for teammates in the 10K Team race to stay connected.

The blog feature is a way for runners and walkers to journal their personal experience in an "online diary" type format. Additionally, bloggers can use the site's training log function to track their runs and record information about weather, course conditions and other relevant information. Depending on the preference of the blogger, the blogs can be either private or shared with the USAF Marathon community.

The forum feature provides an interactive online community for the USAF Marathon events, which allows runners and walkers to share information among themselves about the race, training, helpful advice and other event-related questions. Athletes that are new to the event or have participated in each of the previous six races, as well as out-of-town visitors, can ask questions and share opinions in real time.

The training route planner provides an opportunity for runners and walkers to map and share training runs virtually, instead of having to drive the route or guess their mileage. The service is offered free to the running community and uses detailed interactive maps and satellite images. Runners can also plan and save running routes for future reference. As runners save their routes, they can also search for other routes based on zip codes and cities in order to find running routes when they travel or visit a new area.

These services are brought to the USAF Marathon Web site through a partnership with the online company realbuzz.com. realbuzz.com is the UK's most popular lifestyle and community online networking site, aimed at individuals interested in fitness and nutrition. realbuzz.com is now extending its services -- turn-key, branded forums, blogs and route planners -- to the U.S. running event community, providing easy-to-use web tools that enhance the event Web site, and create a community among the participants.

For more information on the USAF Marathon or to interact with the new online features, visit the Web site at www.usafmarathon.com.
