Staff preparing course for clinic and Commander's Cup Tournament on Sept. 11
Wednesday, September 3, 2008
The staff is busy getting ready for the Commander's Cup golf tournament to be held Sept. 11 this year. "The Commander Cup is a great event," said Andy Peidl, Hubbard Golf Course assistant golf pro.
"The golf course is always in great shape but we do a lot to prepare for the event. Maintenance staff puts in detail work during extra shifts before the event. It's a unique event because we typically recruit a PGA player to donate time to the event. We are fortunate and appreciative this year to get Johnny Miller to do a golf clinic for anyone interested," said Tony Angelico, course golf pro. "We expect 25 to 28 teams (for the event)."
The annual tournament will host a free golf clinic that will be led by Miller, lead golf analyst for NBC Sports golf telecasts and winner of 25 PGA Tour events.
Miller's other accomplishments include becoming the first player elected to the PGA Tour Hall of Fame and being inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1996. The clinic is open to everyone and starts at 11 a.m. at the Hubbard Golf Course.
The entry fee for the tournament for each golfer is $120, which covers green fees, cart and food. Additional proceeds from the entry fee will benefit the Hill Aerospace Museum.
A few openings to play in the tournament still remain, and people can sign up individually or as a team. Interested participants may call Karen Wright at 586-2024 to register.
Following the Commander's Cup golf tournament, previously deployed military members and their families may play the course free of charge. Call the Pro Shop at 777-3272 for more information about this free event.
