Results of recent air sampling in seven Hill Air Force Base buildings were released Dec. 1 to employees, and the results were good news, said Col. Linda R. Medler, 75th Air Base Wing commander.
"No chemicals were detected in the indoor air at a level that would require us to take any kind of response action," Medler said. "We plan to do additional monitoring to ensure conditions do not change, but we are pleased we could provide positive news to our employees."
A total of 47 air samples were collected from the buildings located on the west side of the base. Half of the samples were taken from inside the buildings, and the others tested the air beneath the building floors.
The sampling was done in the buildings because of their location in relation to an area of groundwater contamination on the base. Historical activities and disposal practices of chemicals that were used primarily as degreasing solvents have resulted in contaminated soil and groundwater where the buildings are located. Because these chemicals can evaporate easily and move up into the soil from the groundwater, testing was done to see if vapors from the soil had entered the buildings.
Jarrod Case, the 75th Civil Engineer Group environmental program manager for air sampling, said that as expected, the samples collected from beneath the buildings showed a number of different chemicals.
"We also saw some very low levels of chemicals in the indoor air of each building," Case said, "but these levels were well below action levels and do not pose a risk to workers."
All of the sampling results were posted on a Web site set up for this project, www.hillrab.org/1200area.
