Making room for Leah / Kyle Korver rescues a little girl with leukemia
RIVERDALE -- A little girl with leukemia is getting a room of her own added to her family's home with help from local contractors and Kyle Korver of the Utah Jazz. Leah Warren, 10, was diagnosed with leukemia more than a year ago. Her mother, Raylin Warren, gathered support from local businesses and Riverdale City to build a new bedroom, but then some backed out because of the economy.
Top of Utah cities drenched in June
Many Utah cities got double or triple their average rainfall in June, but Liberty in Ogden Valley received about seven times its average with 7.6 inches. "They got clobbered," said Dan Brown, meteorologist technician for the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City. The NWS still is collecting rainfall totals for several stations across Utah but estimates the state received two to three times more rain than normal.
Hill pilots, others prep for Fourth flyovers
HILL AIR FORCE BASE -- A few Hill Air Force Base reservists are making sure fireworks aren't the only sound of freedom heard this Fourth of July. Following a tradition nearly two decades old, pilots Kurt Gallegos, Pat Wade, Mark Lantz and Chris Robinson, all lieutenant colonels from Hill's 419th Fighter Wing, will hit the skies on Independence Day, flying over parades all across the state.
Taking Charge / New Ogden Air Logistics Center commander living his dream
HILL AIR FORCE BASE -- Literally and figuratively, the Hill Air Force Base community will be looking up to its new boss. Standing at 6 feet 9 inches, Brig. Gen. Andrew Busch, new commander of the Ogden Air Logistics Center, is more than likely the tallest commander the base has ever seen. "Well, I know for sure I'm taller than at least one," Busch said, referring to his 5-foot-2-inch predecessor, Maj. Gen. Kathleen Close.
Increased June job loss suggests economic turnaround may take longer than thought
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. economy shed jobs at a faster pace in June than in May, suggesting that the turnaround in the economy may take longer than expected. Nonfarm payrolls shrank by 467,000 in June, higher than the 325,000 decline expected by economists surveyed by MarketWatch and the 322,000 jobs lost in May.
Fourth offers bang for buck
It's time to celebrate Independence Day by getting together with your neighbors for fireworks, food and fun. But many people are more concerned about money this year than ever before. Events being presented this holiday seem to reflect the concerns of both attendees and presenters. Stadium of Fire, the fabled patriotic celebration at Brigham Young University's stadium, is still going strong in its 29th year. This year's program stars teen heartthrobs The Jonas Brothers.
Hello, Gorgeous Hussies / Band celebrates indie record deal
Almost every young band dreams of the day when members quit their other jobs and devote themselves full time to their music career. With careful planning, Ogden's The Gorgeous Hussies went about making it happen. "Today -- June 15, 2009 -- is a huge day for us," said guitarist/vocalist Jordan Olsen on the day he spoke with the Standard-Examiner. "It is the last day of an 18-month goal we had to be a full-time band. We marked this day on the calendar back then and made a map of things we had to do. And we did it. I was the last to stop working outside the band, and it is now done.
Utah artists serenade summer / New CDs offer mix of styles
Summertime ties in fine with good music, whether it's appreciated sitting on a blanket at an outdoor venue, blasting from the speakers of your classic convertible, or drifting through your ear-buds as you lie sunning. Several local bands and artists have released albums of late that are worth a listen in the warm summer sun. Keep in mind that buying local first is best for both you and your community.
Indigo in demand at Red Butte Garden
It's been two years since the Indigo Girls played Red Butte Garden, and it was a sold-out show. Ticket sales are healthy, as well, for this year's Indigo/Garden show on Tuesday. "I know we've been there something like five times, maybe more," said Amy Ray, half of the singing/songwriting duet that also includes Emily Saliers. "It's almost a tradition to play Red Butte by this time for us. People come from all walks of life, out to have a good time."
Opera company stays afloat in tough times
The show will go on, this season and next. The Utah Festival Opera Company, which opens its summer season next week, will have a full 2010 summer season despite a major budget shortfall, said Michael Ballam, the festival's founding director.

CLEARFIELD -- Daylong Fourth of July fun ends up, somewhat ironically, with prefirework music courtesy of the British Invasion's best-known band. Imagine, a Salt Lake City-based Beatles tribute band, presents a show at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Fisher Park, 934 S. 1000 East. Music begins at 6:30 p.m. with a set by the Clearfield Community Band.
Sizzling-hot RSL looking for more fireworks / Movsisyan, Mathis have offense clicking
SANDY -- How can the hottest team in Major League Soccer have a chip on its collective shoulder? True story, RSL goal-scorer Yura Movsisyan claims. "We gave three points away to San Jose (earlier this season). We want our points back," Movsisyan said Thursday night as Real prepared for tonight's rematch with the Earthquakes.
Owlz slam Raptors / Ogden's early 3-0 lead melts
OREM -- After beating the Owlz on a dramatic walk-off double on Wednesday evening at Lindquist Field, the series shifted to Orem, where Ogden hoped to ease closer to breaking its jinx against the Owlz, which had led to four losses in six contests.Unfortunately for Ogden, after a one-day reprieve, Thursday evening brought about the same old story.
OUR VIEW: Domestic violence charges merit jail
Richard Raymond Walker, 38, is in the Davis County Jail. He has been charged with repeat felonies of violation of a domestic violence protective order. The repeat violations are the result of complaints by his wife, who has accused Walker of domestic violence. Besides the domestic violence arrests, Walker also faces a first-degree felony charge of aggravated sexual abuse of a child.
