Let's all participate in democracy; please vote
Democracy is not a spectator sport. In just a few weeks, we will have a chance to vote in a critically important election, but only if we're registered. Register in person at the County Clerk's office in the Weber Center until Oct. 20.
It's not just about the race for president, although that is critically important. We will have a choice of our U.S. congresspersons, state government candidates, from the governor to our state representatives, state school board, and Weber County commission (local school board positions are all uncontested).
If you want to know which candidate represents your views, you have to do more than listen to TV ads. At www.lwvutah.org you can find contact information about candidates who have responded to the League of Women Voters' request for information. All candidates were contacted and answers posted, but not all have responded. Presidential candidates and some others have Web sites. We hope the Standard will interview all the candidates.
Presidential elections usually result in lines on election day. The League has supported early-voting legislation to make it easier for everyone to vote. Vote in person at six locations around the county between Oct. 21 and Oct. 31. In addition to the county clerk's office, locations include the libraries in Huntsville and Roy, city offices in North Ogden and Marriott-Slaterville and the Ice Sheet. Locations open at 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday. All close at 5 p.m.
