Something howling at Wolf Creek Ski Resort

EDEN -- Pumpkin bowling and live music combine for a howl of a good time Saturday.

The annual Howl Fest runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Wolf Creek Ski Resort, 3567 E. Nordic Valley Way.

Howlers of all ages can compete in the howling contest at 2 p.m. Pumpkin launching, pumpkin bowling and other activities will run until dark.

Music begins with The Barracudas, a Layton band, playing from noon to 4 p.m., followed by Jake Martin, an Ogden Valley acoustic guitarist and singer, at 5 p.m. Sweatband, an Ogden-based teen group, ends the day at 7 p.m.

The festival includes the DNA Rail Jam, a snowless rail jam for snowboarders and skiers. Folks can also trade ski equipment at the gear swap.

Traditionally, Howl Fest has included a Utah State Chili Cook-Off event, but that's been canceled this year due to issues regarding food handlers' permits for out-of-state cooks, said Kira Celestino, events administrator. Wolf Creek chili and salsa will be available for purchase.

Donations of warm clothing such as jackets, gloves and scarves, will be collected for the Ogden Rescue Mission.

Admission is free, but there is a charge for some activities. For more information, call 781-4155.

Wanna see something really scary in skies?

OGDEN -- "The Scary Skies" is the theme of a new Halloween event at Weber State University's Ott Planetarium.

Everything from the Witch Head Nebula to the Wolf Star is featured in the 8 p.m. show Monday on the Weber State campus, 3848 Harrison Blvd.

"There are a whole bunch of these things (in the sky) with Halloween-esque names," said John Boom, a planetarium staff member and physics minor who hosts the live star show.

The program spotlights other objects in the sky that ancient cultures found frightening. Comets, for instance, were once viewed as messengers of doom, auroras were thought to be giant dragons, and eclipses were seen as giant monsters eating the moon, Boom said.

And since a lot of folks are afraid of the dark, Boom stays he'll also talk about dark matter.

Other Monday planetarium shows are "Cosmic Journey," a tour of the universe, at 7 p.m., and "El Cielo Esta Noche," a star show presented in Spanish, at 6 p.m.

Admission to each show is $2 for adults and $1 for students. For information, call 626-6871.
