Company: Speed Street Indoor Raceway

Address: 421 N. Marshall Way, Layton

Phone: (801) 547-9199

Fax: (801) 547-9103

Web: www.SpeedStreetRacing.com

Hours: Mon.-Thurs. 4 p.m.-10 p.m.; Fri.-Sat. 11a.m.-11 p.m.; Sun. 12 p.m.-8 p.m.

What the company does: Indoor go-kart racing on a quarter-mile track featuring passing opportunities, tight corners to test driving skills, and long straights to rev your motor on.

The company owns 34 Sodi Kart go-karts with Honda racing motors, hydraulic disc brakes and padded adjustable seats. Up to 12 people can race at one time, with races typically lasting 20 laps.

At the conclusion of the race, each participant is provided with a print- out of track lap times down to one-hundredth of a second. Safety gear and rules and regulations briefings are designed to ensure the safety of the sport.

Who's who: Owner Jeff Hall; manager Camille Schwed; front desk employees Jordynn Whitaker and Caitlin Webb; track attendants Ryan Flinn, Carlos Artiles, Tyler Bennett and Jace Jenkins.

Clients: With adult and junior carts, anyone from 8 to 80 can enjoy the race. The company has group pricing for events such as corporate retreats and birthday parties.

Gross annual revenue: Although it varies, the company aims for at least $500,000 each year to break even.

Company history: Speed Street has been open for five years at the same location.

Greatest challenge: Determining the outlook for future months.

Proudest moment: In April two years ago, when the company was contemplating going out of business, a buyout fell through and employees decided to push forward. They purchased new junior carts and faster engines for the adult carts.

"Business started picking up shortly after that and has been decent ever since," Schwed said.

Future plans: To eventually build a new building with a couple of tracks and while-you-wait, optional activities.
