Ashton Square plans revealed

By Scott Schwebke

OGDEN --

After years of trying to attract more business downtown, former Ogden Community and Economic Development Director Stuart Reid says he's "putting his money where his mouth is."

Reid unveiled plans Wednesday to spend "tens of millions of dollars" to construct Ashton Square, a sprawling 224,000-square-foot condominium and commercial building at The Junction development.

"When I was economic development director for Ogden, I spent six years promoting downtown," said Reid, who is the owner of Ashton Square LLC.

"I believe in the vision of downtown so much that I'm investing my own money."

Named after Reid's grandson, Ashton Square will be located on a little more than an acre at the corner of 22nd Street and Grant Avenue, west of the Elizabeth Stewart Treehouse Children's Museum.

Construction is slated to begin in August and will last about 14 months. Reid has hired Scott Brown, the city's former business development manager, to oversee the project.

At seven stories, Ashton Square will be the tallest structure at The Junction, an entertainment, retail and residential complex built on the site of the former Ogden City Mall.

Ashton Square will include 66 condominiums ranging in price from about $300,000 to $1 million and encompassing 1,400 to 4,000 square feet, Reid said. Each unit will have at least one deck, and eight of the condominiums will have patios ranging in size from 1,400 to 2,000 square feet.

The building's bottom floor will include a plaza featuring outdoor dining at two restaurants, as well as commercial space for two other businesses, Reid said.

The exterior of Ashton Square will be limestone, brick and stucco, while its metal roof will have a patina finish.

Reid said he plans to live in one of two 4,000-square-foot penthouses and has received inquiries from 24 people interested in purchasing other units.

Community Development Director Dave Harmer said Ashton Square will be a terrific addition to The Junction.

"It's exciting," he said. "It's a great building to have downtown."
