Newest addition is an ammunition systems headquarters in Clearfield

CLEARFIELD -- Faster than a speeding bullet, Alliant Techsystems Inc., continues to grow in the Top of Utah, its newest addition an ammunition systems headquarters in Clearfield.

The move to offices at 938 University Park Blvd. brings 15 senior executive jobs to the area, adding to the 5,600 employees the company already employs here, officials said.

ATK Ammunition Systems Group, the world's leading provider of ammo, made the announcement Friday in Clearfield.

The event was attended by several political dignitaries, including Utah's Sen. Bob Bennett and Sen. Orrin Hatch.

ATK now operates three of its divisions in Clearfield. The other two divisions are ATK Launch Systems Component Refurbishing and ATK Mission Systems Aerospace Structures, both in the Freeport Center.

A proponent of the right to bear arms, Hatch joked it is great to have the ammunition manufacturer in the state.

ATK provides ammunition to the military, police and gun owners.

"I support the Second Amendment, but I don't shoot," Bennett said. "Obviously, we are delighted to have you in Utah. This is a great company and Utah is enormously fortunate."

The governor's office is equally pleased over the company's interest in Utah. "Great things are happening here in the Top of Utah," said Jason P. Perry, executive director for the Governor's Office of Economic Development. "The state has a young, well-educated, bilingual workforce, making it one of the safest places for companies to invest."

Mayor Don Wood said ATK serves Clearfield as a good community partner, as evidenced by the banner hanging in front of Wasatch Elementary School publicly thanking the firm for its support.

The company is not only a boon to his city, Wood said, but provides an economic benefit to Davis County. The ammunition headquarters will relocate from Anoka, Minn.

ATK Ammunitions Systems Group is the world's largest ammunition manufacturing entity, employing more than 6,000 people and generating more than $1.4 billion in annual revenue, ATK spokesman Brian Grace said.

"This move establishes a more centrally located headquarters for the ATK Ammunition Systems Group," said Mark DeYoung, president of ATK Ammunitions Systems Group.

Close access to the Salt Lake International Airport is also a factor in ATK locating many of its groups in Utah, he said.

ATK also has facilities in Brigham City, Logan and Magna.
