Farr West seeks commercial development

FARR WEST -- A large commercial development called Sugar Farms may soon be bringing new stores and restaurants into the city, according to Mayor Jimmie Papageorge.
He said the 76-acre Randall Farm next to Hoagie's Corner has been sold, and a lot of stores are looking at the site and considering bringing their business to Farr West. Hoagie's Corner is at 2705 North and 2000 West.
The planning commission will be taking a look at development in the area and helping to decide on the best way to bring in the new businesses.
"A lot of stores and four restaurants want to come in. There are three big-box sites they're looking at, and office spaces," said Papageorge.
He also said the commercial zone would come right up the fence line of the Pheasant Place subdivision, and he was concerned about this.
Papageorge suggested that a row of town homes go in along this border to create a buffer zone between the subdivision and the commercial zone. The town homes would be in the boundaries of the commercial zone.
"There's going to be a lot of stores go in -- 30 to 35 stores. There's quite a revenue for Farr West. Wangsgards, Macey's and Wal-Mart are looking at it," said Papageorge.
Judy Rowe, a resident of Farr West, said she did not want a Wal-Mart in the community.
Papageorge said the businesses are still just looking and have not yet committed to come into the city.
