GDEN -- Scott USA is in full swing in its new home at Business Depot Ogden, where workers are assembling the company's popular ski goggles by the truckload and countless boxes of sports equipment move for shipment throughout North America.

Company and city officials joined others in the local business community Wednesday to officially welcome the global sports company to its new 280,000-square-foot base in BDO's newest building.

"Scott has played an important part in helping Ogden become the Silicon Valley of the ski industry," Ogden Mayor Matthew Godfrey said. "We now have more ski companies in Ogden than any other city in the world."

The facility features 200,000 square feet of warehouse space that serves as the North American distribution center for all Scott products, including goggles, skis and ski poles, winter apparel, motocross and snowmobile gear and bicycles.

It also has a 40,000-square-foot production area that cranks out goggles at an annual pace of 2 million. The majority of the company's other products are manufactured in Europe and Southeast Asia.

The facility currently has about 150 employees. That number will double over the next two to three years as the company grows and consolidates more of its marketing and sales functions in Ogden, said Beat Zaugg, chief executive of Scott Sports SA, the Switzerland-based parent company of Scott USA.

Zaugg, who made the trip from Switzerland to be at Wednesday's event, said the company has an option to lease the rest of the 400,000-square-foot building, which is currently occupied by Autoliv, and add another 120,000 square feet of new space.

"This gives us the possibility to expand in the near future," he said. "This efficient, comfortable, state-of-the-art facility will allow us to please our customers and dealers, build our products, and increase our business in the North American market."

The Scott facility is the largest at BDO, said Steve Waldrip, project manager for The Boyer Co., which manages the industrial park.

With a 15-year lease on the building and an option to extend for another 15 years, Scott USA plans to stay put in Ogden, said Zaugg, a native of Switzerland.

"We're a private company, so we get to decide," he said. "Swiss people are used to long-term commitments."
