AYTON -- The Davis Chamber of Commerce has gone outside to find someone to fill its top inside position.
The chamber Wednesday named Bountiful City Councilman John Pitt as its new president and chief executive officer.
Pitt replaces former CEO Chris Dallin, who resigned this fall to take a job with McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.
"(Pitt's) job is to continue the pattern of growth we have experienced in the chamber," said Vaughn Jacobsen, chamber board chairman.
Jacobsen said Pitt was selected from 79 applicants who applied for the position. He said the chamber received applications from as far away as Alaska, Texas and Virginia.
Pitt, currently serving his second term on the City Council, was selected for the job based on his extensive experience in the business world, as well as in private business, Jacobsen said.
Pitt has been a senior training manager for MarketStar Corporation and a senior manager for international training and communications with Convergys Corporation.
Vaughn said Pitt also has extensive experience in television production, having worked as a producer and director for the U.S. Senate in Washington, D.C.
"I think what it came down to is that I have a combination of everything the board was looking for," Pitt said, crediting his multifaceted background in politics, broadcasting and communications for helping him land the job.
Although the 44-year-old Pitt will not officially take the chamber post until Jan. 29, the Bountiful resident is already making a transition. He is resigning from the Bountiful City Council, effective Tuesday.
"I'll miss the council," Pitt said. "If this (job) wasn't such a natural extension of what I'm doing with the council, I would have had mixed feelings about it."
Pitt is a graduate of the University of Utah and is currently pursuing his MBA in Global Management.
Diane Townsend, who has been serving as interim Davis Chamber president and CEO, will resume her position as manager of Davis Cable 17. The local cable station is operated under the direction of the chamber.
The Davis Chamber is the third largest chamber group in the state, Jacobsen said.
