Almost every young band dreams of the day when members quit their other jobs and devote themselves full time to their music career. With careful planning, Ogden's The Gorgeous Hussies went about making it happen. "Today -- June 15, 2009 -- is a huge day for us," said guitarist/vocalist Jordan Olsen on the day he spoke with the Standard-Examiner. "It is the last day of an 18-month goal we had to be a full-time band. We marked this day on the calendar back then and made a map of things we had to do. And we did it. I was the last to stop working outside the band, and it is now done.

Utah artists serenade summer / New CDs offer mix of styles

Indigo in demand at Red Butte Garden
It's been two years since the Indigo Girls played Red Butte Garden, and it was a sold-out show. Ticket sales are healthy, as well, for this year's Indigo/Garden show on Tuesday. "I know we've been there something like five times, maybe more," said Amy Ray, half of the singing/songwriting duet that also includes Emily Saliers. "It's almost a tradition to play Red Butte by this time for us. People come from all walks of life, out to have a good time."
Opera company stays afloat in tough times
The show will go on, this season and next. The Utah Festival Opera Company, which opens its summer season next week, will have a full 2010 summer season despite a major budget shortfall, said Michael Ballam, the festival's founding director.
Dodgeball ... Women prove it's not just for kids anymore
WEST HAVEN -- Dodgeball. The mere mention of the word brings to mind images of kids hurling rubber balls at each other in gym class. In West Haven, the balls are being hurled, but this time by grown women. Ultimate Indoor, an indoor soccer facility, hosts women's dodgeball leagues every Monday and Thursday night for 10-week sessions.
