A Novel Obsession
By Katie M EllisWeb site brings together fans of 'Twilight'
Young women everywhere are voraciously reading Stephenie Meyer's final Twilight book -- and their moms are, too. Some of those most crazed with vampire-romance are members of twilightmoms.com, where women over 25 can log on and discuss their Twilight obsession with other adults.
Messages on the site contain confessions of women who can't work, clean, get laundry done or dinner on the table until they've finished the book.
"When I first stumbled across Twilight Moms, I was like 'no way.' I was just happy and relieved that I wasn't the only mom who couldn't stop thinking about all things Twilight. It's instantaneous bonding and friendship," said Pamela Watters, a West Point mother of three. "I have been to quite a few Twilight Mom get-togethers and ... have created lasting friendships with people I might have never got to know ... even though my husband thinks I'm in some type of cult, I'm really glad that I have got to spend some time with amazing people over these absolutely amazing books."
Amy Olson, of Riverdale, is one of 20 moderators for the site and said Twilight Mom members hail from Australia, New Zealand, Germany, England, Mexico and Singapore, with the largest following in Utah.
Leesa Gray, a Farmington mother of four, said before beginning the Twilight series she hadn't read a fiction book for 17 years and had nothing but parenting books in her library.
She said after borrowing the book from her daughter, a new world opened to her.
"(The book) grabbed onto me, and I couldn't let go of it. If I wasn't reading, I was thinking about it. It was all I dreamed about for the first two months. My thoughts and emotions were completely with Bella and Edward ... I love TwilightMoms because I feel normal there. We all have the same story and the same obsession," Gray said.
Members like to meet in person and have gathered at the zoo, restaurants and each other's homes. Last Friday night, local members met for a barbecue prior to the midnight release of "Breaking Dawn" and a slumber reading party after.
Watters said she took a few days off of work so she could lock herself in her bedroom and finish the book.
"My boss knows I will be useless to her until I have finished the book at least once. My hubby thinks I am crazy," Watters said. "Who out there doesn't want that kind of passion in their love life? And I'm not talking about the human-vampire thing. (It's) the way the two of them obsess over each other, extreme emotions that radiate from them, the need they have for one another ... The fact that there are sexy vampires is just icing on the cake."
Both Watters and Gray say their diet of passion is not making their marriages seem dull by comparison. "It puts me in a romantic mood and makes me want to be closer to (my husband)," Watters said.
"If I could explain (the draw to the books) I could get over it," Olson adds, "It's just a great love story. It's good clean fun. Some try to find deep meaning, but it's just a love story."
