Law makes texting while driving illegal
It is a warm summer day and you casually get in your car to go to work. Everything seems perfect, and you unroll your windows to feel that great air in your hair. Your favorite songs are playing on the radio and you think that it can't get much better than this.
DREAM VENDING MACHINE?
No offense to the poor lunch ladies who have to serve us government-purchased food, but there are some days when Utah teens really would rather go somewhere besides our school cafeteria to get our midday meal.
Do the fans make a difference?
Everyone's been a fan at a sporting event sometime in his or her life, but not everyone has played in a game. Do you ever wonder what those athletes think of us, the fans screaming and waving and hollering on the sidelines? How big of an effect does our cheering or wearing school colors really have on them or what's going on on the playing field or court?
Bystander, bully and victim speak out
There are always three roles in every bullying case, the bully, the victim and the bystander. Here is how a few Top of Utah teens have experienced these different roles.

According to the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center, 30 percent of American kids are involved with bullying on a daily basis. That means every day 2.7 million kids are either bullying others or being bullied themselves.

Ticket to enchanted 'Smithsonian' well worth it
A couple of days before "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" opened, my friends and I were talking about how we'd like to see it. I admitted I hadn't seen the original "Night at the Museum" yet and said it would be funny if I ended up seeing the second one before watching the first one.
Popular big brothers, sisters a pain
It's the first day of school and your teacher is calling roll. When she gets to your name, she asks, "Are you Jane's younger brother?" "Yes," you reply halfheartedly, because you have been through this routine so many times.
Time for trying tryouts
It's spring and the signs are abundant. The sun is shining, flowers are blossoming, birds are chirping and people of all ages are lining up to test their skills in the arts. Yes, it's auditioning season.
Top of Utah teens talk about painful pet parting
If you have ever owned animals you know that fond memories are made with them. You care for them every day. You make sure they are happy and healthy. You talk to them and know they are listening. Whether it is your childhood dog, a lovable cat or a feathered friend, the fear of losing them is never a pleasant thought.
Some customers just haven't heard of the golden rule
What kind of world would this world be if everyone in it was just like me?
Oh yeah! Juniors rule!
It's hard to comprehend before you are actually a senior, but once you get there and realize this is the end of your high-school career, it's hard to avoid picking up some senioritis. Once seniors begin college applications and fulfill all their required classes, you can pretty much count them out of the school scene.
'Happiest Place on Earth' still happy for a teenager
Almost 18 years old and I had never entered the magical realm of "The Happiest Place on Earth."
Teachers have feelings, too
"I hate Mr. Smith," you hear someone say as you walk to your next class. Or, "Mrs. Johnson is the worst teacher in the school."
Holidays not getting the proper respect
I was so ready for this St. Patrick's Day. I'd had the outfit picked out since October, when participation in "The Wizard of Oz" necessitated the purchase of bright green skinny jeans. This year, my entire ensemble, head to toe, from my earrings to my sparkly flip-flops, would be green.
Is your mouth stressed out?
I recently found myself on trial at my semi-annual dentist appointment. The verdict: I had two cavities.
Hot in the '90s
Well, it's 2009, the end of another decade. But we've been through this before. Ten years ago, in 1999, we said good-bye to the decade of our childhood.
And now, a few words on the P-word ...
I am a female. I have two X chromosomes, and with that second X, I have inherited many stereotypically female traits and ideas. I love lip gloss, sad movies, romantic gestures and can't be somewhere without a shower for more than two days. I'm a fan of frilly dresses, shiny stones, pretty flowers and happy endings.

High school is all about who you are, including who you hang out with, what you do and even what you drive every day through the school parking lot.

What if I told you that deep inside of you, there's a person who gets up at 6 in the morning and loves it?

Just because fall is over and spring is creeping around that corner, it doesn't mean athletes have nothing to do.
Who's on facebook?
"Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life."
Forever young
You are walking down the halls of your high school when a girl catches your eye. Her hair is in pigtails, she is wearing a white "Scooby-Doo" T-shirt with a blue polka-dot mini skirt. She also has a "High School Musical" backpack that is small enough for a kindergartner but can in no way fit any high school textbook in it. Not only that but she is eating a giant lollipop.
Graduation grindstone
"They added two more high school graduation requirements this year? That's just not fair!"
The Irish jig is up!

When dating, there's nothing wrong with playing the field

Dream jobs
How often have you heard: "When I grow up, I want to be a _____?"
Emotional abuse not always visible
The word "abuse" can throw so many images into a human mind. There are bruises, cuts, welts and scars from physical abuse. There is evidence of sexual abuse, albeit not so easy to see.
Healthy habits now will pay off in the long run
You come home from another long day of school. All you have time to do is grab something small to eat and run out the door again for your piano lesson.

An exercise video game? Isn't that an oxymoron?

As I walk through the mall, one idea is a constant. It runs through my mind like an overplayed song on the radio, the one whose chorus is set on permanent repeat in the back of the mind for months.
Having one of those days?
Everybody has them -- those days when nothing goes right.
Same sex marriage is about equality
I've always been taught to treat others as equals. Authority figures in my life have made it a point to eradicate racism, sexism and general cruelty from their classrooms and teams.
The Long and Short of it
What if you were so tall it was a treasure hunt to find clothes that fit or so short that you had to use a handicap sticker in your car to drive?
More teenagers going the meatless route
At school dances and classes parties there is a good chance you will spot someone who asks if there is meat in the lasagna, gelatin in the dessert or cheese in the dip.
Driving in the snowtakes extra skill
Imagine you are driving while it's snowing. Although it was only snowing for a little while, when you look out your windshield, it looks like you are driving through a continuous coat of fog. Little black book proving to be new BFF
Now that the Christmas season has come and gone, I'm sure many teens have gifts that they think they will never use. People say, "Why on earth did they give me that?! When am I ever going to use it? I suppose I could wrap it up again and re-gift it."
There's truth beneath Chuck Norris jokes
"Chuck Norris once punched a man in his soul."
When it comes to modern politics, ask yourself, WWFFD?
After the 2008 election, I found myself analyzing our electoral system and its implications for our present government representatives and leaders. I thought about how our system has evolved since the days of our Founding Fathers, and whether or not that change has had a positive or negative impact.
Fans of books will enjoy 'Inkheart'
As the lights dimmed and "Inkheart" began, I didn't really know what to expect. I knew the basic story line, as I had read the book "Inkheart," written by Cornelia Funke, in sixth grade, but my retention wasn't that great.
They're back ... Scrooges, Grinches
'Twas the season to be jolly, but the holidays are gone, and with them, something has vanished.
