Top of Utah cities drenched in June
Many Utah cities got double or triple their average rainfall in June, but Liberty in Ogden Valley received about seven times its average with 7.6 inches. "They got clobbered," said Dan Brown, meteorologist technician for the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City. The NWS still is collecting rainfall totals for several stations across Utah but estimates the state received two to three times more rain than normal.
Hill pilots, others prep for Fourth flyovers
HILL AIR FORCE BASE -- A few Hill Air Force Base reservists are making sure fireworks aren't the only sound of freedom heard this Fourth of July. Following a tradition nearly two decades old, pilots Kurt Gallegos, Pat Wade, Mark Lantz and Chris Robinson, all lieutenant colonels from Hill's 419th Fighter Wing, will hit the skies on Independence Day, flying over parades all across the state.

HILL AIR FORCE BASE -- Literally and figuratively, the Hill Air Force Base community will be looking up to its new boss. Standing at 6 feet 9 inches, Brig. Gen. Andrew Busch, new commander of the Ogden Air Logistics Center, is more than likely the tallest commander the base has ever seen. "Well, I know for sure I'm taller than at least one," Busch said, referring to his 5-foot-2-inch predecessor, Maj. Gen. Kathleen Close.

High school students take summer jobs to get college education
LAYTON -- Officials for a summer work program for high school students are reporting that fewer jobs are available this year because adults affected by the sluggish economy through layoffs and cutbacks are taking many of those positions. For several years, more than 230 Davis School District students have received high school credit by working summer jobs through the Summer Work-Based Learning Program, coordinated through Layton High School.
Ogden Nature Center program gives insight into wildlife
OGDEN -- Des Ta Te was a show-stealer Wednesday. As an Ogden Nature Center guide talked about Des' injuries, the bald eagle turned her back on the crowd and spread her one-and-a-half wings while shrieking at the sky. A murmur of admiration swept the watching crowd of 60 kids and parents. Satisfied with the attention, Des lets Melissa Robinson, outreach educator for the Ogden Nature Center, continue her presentation.

HUNTSVILLE -- Four thousand former residents of Nebraska moved into Ogden Valley on Wednesday but taxpayers needn't worry: The only schools these newcomers will be crowding are in the clear, cool waters of Pineview Reservoir. The tiger muskie fingerlings arrived at the reservoir about 10:30 a.m., completing an overnight trip from a hatchery in Nebraska.
Artistic 'Trail to Pioneer Days'
OGDEN -- Take a drive or a stroll today along 25th Street or Washington Boulevard and you'll immediately realize that something is different. Nearly 100 artists have collectively added splashes of color along those thoroughfares. Wednesday, volunteers set up 61 hand-painted porcelain horses to announce the arrival of the 75th anniversary of Ogden Pioneer Days. The display officially is called the Trail to Pioneer Days.
Guilty plea in Ponzi case
OGDEN -- Bonnie Smith Leavitt pleaded guilty Wednesday to a Ponzi scheme investigators say touched nearly 30 victims. Sentencing was set for Leavitt for Aug. 26 while the defense and prosecutors try to agree on restitution. Currently the two sides, respectively, argue $604,000 versus $690,000. Leavitt, 43, has admitted to ripping off investors with a real estate scheme promising a monthly investment return of 18 percent or more.
Wet spring may delay state wildfire season
LAYTON -- Even though the foothills and mountains are green with lush vegetation, shooting off fireworks on any federal land is still against the law. That includes Forest Service, National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management," said Kathy Jo Pollock, a Forest Service spokeswoman. Garland man killed in head-on crash
HONEYVILLE -- A 40-year-old Garland man was killed in a head-on collision Tuesday. The accident occurred on State Road 38 near 3000 North around 4 p.m. Brandon K. Liston, 18, Brigham City, was driving a gray 2006 Ford Fusion southbound, according to the Utah Highway Patrol, and had just entered a curve in the road when he drifted into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a white 1998 Plymouth Breeze, driven by David R. Dunn. Both vehicles came to an abrupt stop in the northbound lane, the report said.

FARMINGTON -- A man accused of stabbing to death a woman who had taken him into her home may never go to trial because of his mental illness, a prosecutor said Tuesday.
