GDEN -- A Friday afternoon mix-up gave a whole new meaning to "free windshield repair."

It all started when Mike Nichols asked to borrow his friend Kim Morley's truck, a white 1990 Chevrolet 1500, to go to the Washington Mutual bank at 1145 Wall Ave.

Leaving the doors unlocked, Nichols went into the bank and returned 10 minutes later to find the truck gone.

Around the same time, a man driving a blue 1989 Chevrolet 2500 dropped his truck off at Techna Glass, some 50 feet away from the bank, at 110 W. 12th St. The two businesses share several parking spaces, and the man just happened to park next to the truck driven by Nichols.

"The customer walked in, and he handed us his keys," Techna Glass employee Mike Levitre said. "We walked outside and saw two Chevy trucks, a white one and a blue one."

Levitre tried the white one first.

It started.

It also had a cracked windshield.

So Levitre pulled the truck into the garage, changed the windshield and continued to go about his business.

"Then the customer came back, and said, 'You need to do my windshield,' " he said.

Levitre and other Techna Glass employees quickly realized their mistake and changed the man's windshield. But still, they had no one to claim the white pickup with the brand-new windshield.

"It had been out there for a while, and we even checked the bank and no one said it was theirs," Techna Glass employee Steve Beck said.

According to police records, Morley reported the truck stolen and police were on the lookout when Officer Robert Cahoon happened to drive by the Techna Glass at 5:30 p.m. and spotted the truck.

He radioed the station, and truck and owner were soon reunited.

Techna Glass employees said they had no idea the truck had been reported stolen.

Morley was not charged for the windshield replacement, and could not be reached for comment.
