PERRY -- A combination of fog, ice and speed are being blamed for 15 accidents involving 36 vehicles that shut down sections of two interstate highways in Box Elder County for several hours Saturday.

Six crashes involving 22 vehicles occurred on I-15 near Mile Post 361 outside of Perry, said Trooper Aaron Beesley of the Utah Highway Patrol. A half-dozen people were injured in the crashes that began around 8:40 a.m.

Victims complained of neck and back pain and were taken to Bear River Hospital in Tremonton, Brigham City Community Hospital and Ogden Regional Medical Center, authorities said.

The section of I-15 where the crashes occurred was closed for about three hours Saturday.

In addition, nine other crashes occurred starting around 6 a.m. near Mile Post 22 on I-84 about 18 miles west of Tremonton, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Brian Nelson.

Fourteen vehicles were involved, including six tractor-trailers, he said. Three people were injured, including a 15-year-old girl who was airlifted to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, he said.

The quarter-mile section of I-84 where the accidents happened was reopened to traffic around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

The conditions of those injured in the crashes were not available. Some of the motorists involved in the accidents may have been driving too fast for existing weather conditions and may be ticketed, Beesley said.
