Monday, March 17, 2008
CLEARFIELD -- A Union Pacific train and tractor trailer collided this morning at the Freeport Center. No one was injured in the accident.
Police said the accident occurred at about 700 South and 500 West. Truck driver, Charles Eastland, 58, of Ogden, told police he was traveling eastbound through the Freeport Center. He said he approached the railroad crossing marked with signs only and did not see a train approaching. He also said the sun was in his eyes.
He heard a train horn and looked to his right and saw the train about to collide with his truck. The driver said he accelerated to avoid the train, but was unable to get completely out of the way. The train collided with the trailer causing it to flip over and spill some of the contents.
The trailer was carrying plastic beads that are used in the manufacturing of assorted hard plastic products.
The tractor trailer received extensive damage to the tractor trailer and the train engine received only minor damage. The road way was shut down for approximately an hour and a half while crews cleaned up the accident.
Possible charges are pending review of the accident.
