"No smoking" signs being posted in Davis County parks

LAYTON -- Park visitors across the county will be greeted this spring with "no smoking signs."

South Weber already has all of its signs in place in its parks, health officials said.

Layton also has posted 40 "no smoking" signs.

West Point is ordering more signs so they can put them on the backstops of local baseball diamonds, said Tom Hanson, assistant city manager.

"We found people are smoking on the bleachers while in close proximity of others," Hanson said.

Signs are posted at all the entrance ways of West Point's parks.

"We want to make it very, very clear (there is no smoking)," Hanson said.

Other cities, like Clearfield, are waiting for Boy Scout committees to approve Eagle Scout projects so their signs can get posted, said Tracy Heun, Clearfield's community service director.

The Davis County Health Department handed out 525 signs earlier this year. They were paid for by the Utah Department of Health.

So far no citations have been issued even though the county ordinance went into effect Jan. 1, said Davis County Health Director Lewis Garrett.
