MORGAN — The U.S. Forest Service plans to make its first attempt at a prescribed burn above Mountain Green this morning.
The burn will take place only if weather allows. The burn area is north of I-84 on the Morgan side of Weber Canyon. A similar prescribed burn in March 2007, on the Weber County side of the same mountain, successfully burned about 300 acres.
Firefighters will meet at the Forest Service helicopter base adjacent to the Morgan County Airport for the initial briefing. If conditions allow, they will start lighting brush on fire at 11 a.m.
District Ranger Chip Sibbernsen said the prescribed burn is intended to reduce vegetation, mostly Gambel oak and bigtooth maple. It will also reduce fuels on the mountain so any wildfires later in the summer have less chance to spread.
Fire crews will be on the ground today and Saturday to control the burn.
