OGDEN — The residents of more than a dozen homes were evacuated for more than an hour Tuesday afternoon after a backhoe reportedly hit a natural gas line near the intersection of 25th Street and Gramercy Avenue.
Questar was on the scene working to repair a 2-inch gas line at about 11 a.m., and the area would be reopened as soon as it was safe, said Ogden Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve Splinter. A spray of gas and dust near the backhoe was visible from about a block away.
Splinter estimated between 15 and 20 people were forced to leave their homes and businesses while the leak was repaired.
Fire crews began to clear from the scene and reopen roads in the area shortly before noon Tuesday.
Several fire and police vehicles blocked intersections around the leak. Twenty-fifth Street was closed from Monroe to halfway between Gramercy and Quincy Avenues.
Emergency crews also had Gramercy closed for about two blocks, from between 24th and 25th Streets, down to halfway between 26th and 27th Streets. The area was cleared farther to the south because of wind in the area, Splinter said.
Houses and businesses around the leak were evacuated for a little more than an hour before the area was slowly reopened.
