Road rage crash sends man to hospital in critical condition

CENTERVILLE — A 52-year-old man was flown to a local hospital Thursday night in critical condition after his motorcycle was sideswiped against another car traveling northbound on 400 East.

The motorcyclist had his 9-year-old son on the Harley bike with him when he collided with the car at 100 North.

The incident started when a 32-year-old female driving a dark gray Mazda Passenger threw her cigarette butt out the window.

The man apparently became upset with the woman when she did this and sped up to drive alongside her and started yelling at her, said Sgt. Niles Bartleson.

The woman began yelling back and started to speed up out of fear.

“The car and motorcycle ended up sideswiping, causing the motorcycle to go down,” Bartleson said.

The motorcyclist, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, suffered head trauma and sustained road rash to his chest and abdomen area. Bartleson said the man’s son, who was wearing the helmet, suffered road rash on his upper right hand shoulder.

The 9-year-old was taken by ambulance to a local hospital as a precaution.

Bartleson said the man’s wife was riding another motorcycle behind her husband and son. She was not injured, but went with her son by ambulance.

The car’s female driver suffered no injuries and there was relatively little damage to her vehicle.

“Very minimal damage to the car,” Bartleson said. (The woman) was just very emotional.”

Police received the call around 8:50 p.m.

The motorcycle was totaled, and the accident is still being investigated by police.

What a nighmare! A dad should have put his son first--NO MATTER WHAT! And if the mother/wife was there too--she should have intervened somehow, if possible. The driver of the car sounds like a total idiot as she was aggrivating the situation when she could see there was a child on the back of the bike. My god, what is wrong with these people???????????????? They all (except the child) deserve what they get.

the major detail left out was that this stupid idiot in the car, decided to get mad at the motorcyclist who confronted her and swerved over to "cut him off" and instead he hit him!! Now if you think he needs to be charged. Imagine what this idiot has to live with if he dies!!! She should be charged with child endangerment because of her road rage. Now she has to deal with the fact that he might not make it and this little boy has the vision of seeing his father laying face down on the street with blood everywhere.

The rider not wearing a helmet was relevant because he suffered head injuries. It's the same if someone is thrown from a car, then you mention if they were wearing seatbelts or not.

The guy sounds like a real idiot to me! Reminds one of the old saying: "you should never take a knife to a gun fight"

I doubt that the motorcycle side swiped the auto. It was the other way around! Why is this woman not in jail?

Also, why did the article even mention wearing a helmet? Would it have protected him from the ignorance of this woman with the cigarette butt? Would it have prevented the accident?

Ladies, the woman threw her cig butt out the car window. When you see someone doing something rude and inconsiderate, you've got to call them on it. I doubt it was as simple as that. She probably threw it AT him.

When I'm walking down the sidewalk, and somebody throws their cigerette on the pavement, I always pick it up and give it back to them, whether they're big, little, male, female, business suit, or dungarees. They get mad but I make my point.

IF the guy was in the wrong, which we can't tell from this brief article, Karma got him and he's in for a painful stay in the hospital and some rehabilitation. He's ALREADY been held responsible.

I agree...to act in the manner that this man did was STUPID but to do it with his son on the bike? He is the guilty one and should be held responsible for the injuries to his innocent son, not to mention the HORRID example he was to this boy!
