Hooper girl dies in Plain City crash
PLAIN CITY -- A 16-year-old female died at the scene of an accident Friday evening despite the efforts of medical personnel attempted to save her.
The female, a Hooper resident, was riding in the back seat behind the driver of a 1992 Ford Escort when it was heading west along 2050 North.
A 26-year-old male driving a 1999 Ford F250 pick-up truck north on 5900 West failed to yield at the yield sign. The truck crashed into the driver's side and passenger compartment of the Escort. Police were unsure if excessive speed was involved.
The Escort spun around and went off the shoulder of the road to the north before hitting a fire hydrant and stopping. The truck spun around and rolled over before ending up facing southbound on its side at the intersection.
Police received the call around 6:56 p.m. A helicopter arrived at 7:14 p.m., but medical personnel could not save the 16-year-old, said Sgt. Dave Creager of Weber County Sheriff's Office.
"The impact started with the driver's door, but the (force) of the impact was the rear passenger compartment (of the) two-door car," he said. "She didn't have much of a chance."
The force of the truck caved in the passenger compartment of the car and trapped the 16-year-old female inside. The driver and passengers were able to extricate themselves from the vehicle however.
Creager said the rear passenger on the right side of the Escort may have a broken collar bone and possible internal injuries. The 16-year-old male was transported by ambulance to Ogden Regional Hospital.
The 16-year-old female driver and 17-year-old male passenger in the front seat seemed fine, Creager said. They were both transported by ambulance as a precaution for injury, he said.
Creager said it looked like the driver or passengers of the Escort were not wearing their seat belts, but that a seat belt probably wouldn't have helped any of them.
"Based on the mechanism of the injury, it doesn't seem like it would have made a difference," he said. "The damage to the vehicle was too much."
The truck driver from West Haven appeared to be uninjured. The truck had slight damage to the right front, but damage to the car was far more severe, Creager said.
"(It was a) little Escort versus a full-size truck," he said. "The truck driver is pretty shook up right now."
Police are still investigating the accident and interviewing the truck's driver.
Names of the truck's driver and driver and passengers of the Escort were not released. Police are still trying to reach family members of the victim to inform them of the accident.
"It's a terrible tragedy and tough news to deliver," Creager said.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene. Police finished cleaning up the accident around 10:30 p.m.
