SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Cities in Utah are struggling along with the rest of the nation in an economic slump.
A report by the National League of Cities says 74 percent of cities surveyed in the West are facing financial struggles.
Many have been hit with declining tax revenues and rising prices for gas, health insurance and other items.
Along the Wasatch Front, more than a dozen cities raised property taxes this year to balance their budgets.
Laurie Harvey, finance director for Midvale, says her city has been hit by a drop in sales tax revenue. Midvale approved a 12.5 percent property tax hike in August.
The NLC survey found 79 percent of city finance officers across the country expect it will be even more difficult to meet financial demands in 2009.
