Animal control officers swamped after vandals free 6,000 mink

KAYSVILLE — County animal control officers have a backlog of calls from residents about loose minks after a Sunday incident at a mink farm that industry representatives believe was sabotage.

Davis County Sheriff’s Lt. Brad Wilcox said at 10 a.m. that the animal control division had at that moment eight calls for service regarding loose minks.

“All morning they’ve been out receiving calls from folks in the area,” Wilcox said.

The minks haven’t made it too far. Wilcox said the calls are coming in from within a mile radius of the farm.

Wilcox advised residents with minks near their homes to stay safe and call animal control.

“It’s like any little rodent: they fight, they claw. It’s pretty hard (to capture a mink),” Wilcox said.

Meanwhile, Kaysville Police investigators are gearing up for day two of the investigation.

Kaysville Police Capt. Paul Miya said there are no signs of forced entry into the farm but that there were signs that vandals made several escape routes for the loose animals.

“They cut holes so they could get out of the farm areas,” Miya said of an exterior chainlink fence that surrounds the property.

He said intruders could have climbed the fence to enter the property and that the cages were not locked.

Miya said 498 cages were opened releasing about 6,000 mink.
