FARR WEST — A 57-year-old mother was in critical but stable condition Thursday, stabbed multiple times by her 20-year-old mentally ill son following a dispute over several pay-per-view TV shows he ordered on his grandmother’s account, police said.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to the family’s home on 1725 West around 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon after Tyler John Hamlen called 911 and reported two men dressed in black had broken into the house and stabbed his mother.
Upon arriving, deputies found Gaylynn Hamlen suffering from multiple stab wounds to her back, chest, abdomen and throat, said Weber County Sheriff’s Capt. Klint Anderson.
Investigators soon determined Tyler Hamlen was behind the stabbing and took him into custody. He later confessed to the attack, said Sgt. John Morrow.
Court documents paint the following picture: The fight began when Gaylynn Hamlen became angry with her son after he ordered several TV shows on his grandmother’s DirectTV account. Tyler Hamlen became angry and started breaking things inside the home, prompting Gaylynn Hamlen to threaten to call police.
When she turned her back to her son, he grabbed a knife from the kitchen and began stabbing her in the back. He then dropped the knife and Gaylynn Hamlen ran to the door for help.
Tyler Hamlen told police he then grabbed another knife and caught his mother at the front door, where he pulled her to the ground, put his knee on her and stabbed her several more times in the chest and neck.
He told police his mother was yelling for him to stop and tried to block the blows by putting up her arms.
He then ran outside the home and called 911 with a fabricated story.
Gaylynn Hamlen was taken by ambulance to McKay-Dee Hospital Center, where she underwent surgery Thursday. She is in critical condition but is expected to make a full recovery, Anderson said.
Tyler Hamlen was booked into Weber County Jail on charges of attempted criminal homicide.
Morrow said police have a small history at the address with Tyler Hamlen himself and that he has shown violent tendencies in the past.
Tyler Hamlen is mentally ill and bipolar, Anderson said.
