SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Mexicans living in a four-state area have elected a counselor to represent their interests to the government back home.
Utah, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming chose Roshbita Lopez for the Local Council of Mexicans Abroad. More than 500,000 Mexicans live in the four-state area.
Lopez is a U.S. citizen and Spanish teacher in a Salt Lake-area district. She received eight of 14 votes cast by an electoral committee in the late September election. Orem’s Gabriel Perez came in second with three votes.
The 120-member council was formed in 2002 by then-Mexican President Vicente Fox.
Lopez, 42, will star her three-year term in January.
