ROY — A power outage left sections of Roy, West Haven and Hooper in the dark Tuesday morning.
The outage affected students at four Weber School District schools, with one school closing early, said spokesman Nate Taggart.
Rocky Mountain Power spokesman Jeff Hymas said the outage occurred at 7:38 a.m. and was caused by a fire on a utility pole. The initial outage affected 1,500 customers, with power restored to all but 530 customers by 8:16 a.m., Hymas said.
Those customers will be without power for most of the day, he said.
“It looks like the pole was badly damaged. It’s likely that crews will need to replace the pole,” he said, adding that he expects the repair to be complete by about 3 p.m.
Classes will be let out early today at Country View Elementary, 4650 W. 4800 South, West Haven, Taggart said. Parents can begin picking up their children at 1:15 p.m., he said.
“If they cannot, we will keep them there until parents do come,” he said.
Country View has few windows for natural light, so school administrators decided it would be best if the school closed early.
The district has activated its electronic notification system to call each student’s guardian to alert them about the schedule change, Taggart said.
Rocky Mountain Junior High School, 4350 W. 4800 South, West Haven, and West Haven Elementary, 4385 S. 3900 West, were also without power this morning, but back-up generators allowed classes to continue uninterrupted, he said.
Power went out at Kanesville Elementary, 3112 S. 3500 West, Hooper, but was restored before school started, Taggart said.
