SALT
LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah public policy group says the state’s air is getting cleaner.

The Utah Foundation says the state is meeting or working to meet national air-quality standards and that it is looking at ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Utah Division of Air Quality Director Cheryl Heying says, however, that Salt Lake, Davis, Utah and Weber counties — home to most of the state’s largest cities— are still having problems meeting newer federal standards on ozone and particulate matter.

She says pollutants also tend to get caught in the state’s valleys and bowls.

In a foundation survey, voters said the environment is their eighth-highest concern.

I agree. I have lived in other cities where public transportation is free on high pollution days. It should be done here.

And --- something that was discussed last year and that is done in some other cities --- on air quality warning days, make UTA Bus and Trax rides in the warning areas free. Yes, it will cost money, because the state would have to reimburse UTA for lost revenues on those days. But consider the costs of a continued failing to meet the fed air quality guidelines. Those costs will offset the expense somewhat. And consider the collateral health costs of people breathing highly polluted air, many of which will be picked up in the end by the public. Worth thinking about, seems to me.

What if Utah's highest earning companies put in solar panels? We have plenty of Wal-marts. They could create their own electricity, and possibly provide extra for the community. Help doctors and insurance companies help people to suit smoking. Maybe vouchers?
