Just for the Howl of It / Family fun found at frightening fest

By Brooke Nelson

EDEN -- Craig Kaminski can terrify young children with his wolf-like howl, but on Saturday he used his impersonation to win a season family ski pass to Wolf Creek Ski Resort.

The Huntsville resident was the winner of the Howl Fest howling contest in Eden.

"It's a lot of fun," said Kaminski, who came in second in the event a few years ago.

"I can scare the heck out of them."

The howling contest and pumpkin bowling were just a couple of events making their annual appearance at the festival, but there were a few new additions also.

DNA Rail Jam, a snowless rail jam, was on site for skiers and snowboarders to keep up on their skills.

Snowboarder David MacKnight said he's used the rail jam before.

"It's fun for not having any snow," he said.

Thirteen-year-old Adam Hebert said it snowed last year and was freezing cold during the Howl Fest, so this year's sunny weather was a bonus.

"We get about 400 or 500 people every year," said Sue Munson, director of guest services.

"A lot of people come to buy season passes."

Although the event is organized to sell passes for the resort, this year proceeds from many of the individual activities will be given to charity.

Charities include the Christmas Tree Jubilee benefiting the Weber School Foundation, and a program at Wolf Creek Ski Resort offering free weekend retreats for families stationed at Hill Air Force Base.

While watching their children get their faces painted, fling pumpkins or climb a rock wall, parents explained what draws them to the resort every year.

"It's very family-friendly because all the runs come down to one spot," said Trent Snow, who brings his two skiers and three snowboarders to the mountain every year.

"You're not going to lose your kids."

Roy resident Wolfgang Schlagel said his family comes because it is the best price around and "they have the perfect beginner hill."

Howl Fest began at 10 a.m. and wrapped up around 8 p.m. Saturday.

Wolf Creek Ski Resort is at 3567 Nordic Valley Way, in Eden.
