Car-sharing program proposed for Salt Lake City
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Transit Authority, University of Utah and Salt Lake City are hoping to bring a car-sharing program to Utah. The program would allow people to reserve cars online and use them only when needed for a fee. The programs free participants from car payments, insurance and volatile gasoline prices.
Such programs are common in large metropolitan areas like Chicago and Philadelphia and midsize cities like Albuquerque, N.M., where the rate is $9 an hour or $66 a day, plus an annual membership. Albuquerque’s program covers gas and insurance.
UTA Assistant General Manager Mike Allegra says UTA hopes to have a program operating in Salt Lake City in the next six months. The program would provide parking spots downtown and near the intersection of bus lines, light-rail and commuter rail.
