Hearing canceled in sect land sale dispute
By JENNIFER DOBNERST. GEORGE -- A judge has canceled a hearing in a more than 3-year-long fight over the sale of a parcel of land in a polygamous church trust, saying she wants to give the two sides time to negotiate outside of court.
Third District Court Judge Denise Lindberg said Friday the parties are showing a good-faith effort to resolve issues related to the United Effort Plan Trust. The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has designated a 700-plus-acre area of the trust in Arizona for a temple.
The $110 million property trust was taken over by the Utah courts in 2005 after allegations of mismanagement. Now a court-appointed fiduciary wants to sell it to pay millions of dollars in legal fees.
The sect claims their religious practices have been violated by secular control of the trust.
