NURLA to look for new options for landfill
BRIGHAM CITY -- A landfill in Box Elder might still be an option for a Top of Utah waste consortium, despite the repeal of the Box Elder County landfill sale.
Members of the Northern Utah Regional Landfill Authority, a group of waste management districts covering five counties, met Tuesday to discuss the status of NURLA and possible options for the future.
Gary Laird, solid waste administrator for Weber County, said the group decided to keep NURLA together for the coming year.
Now NURLA is faced with the task of looking to other options. Laird said the group is considering five other landfill sites, including Whites Valley and Promontory.
The next step is a public hearing for the NURLA budget on Dec. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Box Elder County Courthouse. This year's proposed $80,000 budget is half of last year's.
NURLA will be meeting again in February to discuss preliminary analysis of other sites.
