CLINTON -- The cliché about shoppers fighting the crowds for a good deal was true Friday.

Jeanne Hock sported a red, scratched neck and dig marks on her arm as she told of being attacked in the early morning rush over a child-sized, drivable car that she'd stood next to since 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving at the 24-hour Walmart Supercenter, waiting for the holiday sale to begin.

"I had a hold of it, and she's, like, choking me," Hock said. She said the woman who attacked her was also at the time sitting on top of her friend, Ashlee Van Voris.

"I've never been hit in my life, not over a toy," Van Voris said of the experience.

"She was underneath the box," said Mindi Fletcher, pointing to Van Voris. She said she, Hock and the woman who did the choking were on top of it.

The three Clinton women discussed their battle while standing in a checkout line 20 carts deep just moments after the 5 a.m. scheduled start of the sale.

Black Friday, as the day after Thanksgiving has come to be known, brought near pandemonium at some Top of Utah stores.

A shopper at Sears in Riverdale reported being so confused in a huge crowd of people that he gave up trying to buy a $600 washer and dryer set shortly after the store opened at 5 a.m., because store clerks could not tell him in a timely manner whether the items were in stock.

Checkout lines at Toys "R" Us in Layton were reported to reach from one end of the store to the other just moments after that store opened early Friday.

Screams rang out at 5 a.m. at Walmart when store clerks, doubling as store security, stepped away from a display of remote-controlled helicopters and cars as shoppers scrambled for their share of the bounty.

Another shopper said she was smashed by a man who pushed a cart at her as she tried to grab a toy.

"I don't think I'm ever doing this again," said Shauna Cooper, who drove from her Eagle Mountain home to reach the sale. "I'm going to take a Xanax and chill somewhere."

Alisa Graham, of North Ogden, said she had to hold up a stack of Hannah Montana guitars that plug into the television to keep them from falling down on other shoppers as they grabbed for them.

Other stores with advertised "door-buster" savings stayed busy, but without such confusion.

An orderly crowd filed into Staples in Layton at 6 a.m. Friday. The buyers of a handful of the hottest-priced items already had been determined as early arrivals were handed vouchers guaranteeing their sale.

As doors opened, these first-in-line shoppers gathered at a prespecified table where employees traded the items for the vouchers.

"It's calm here," said Danelle Birch, of North Layton. "We came for this camera, but they only had six of them. When we got here at 5:30, they were gone."

She also was at the store for a rotating digital image frame for $40, which she did find.

But Birch and her husband, Pete, managed to spend $80 more on three flash-drive memory cards, which they decided to buy while standing in the checkout line for 15 minutes.

These calm shoppers were not the only ones who were polite Friday.

There were many shoppers at even the busiest stores who made pacts with strangers to get items for each other in opposite ends of stores.

Graham was fighting the crowds on a mission of charity. She and eight of her friends had each adopted a child from the Salvation Army for Christmas.

After carefully studying the advertisements Thursday, most of the group members split up to hit stores in different areas of town.

The group targeted Davis County stores they believed would be less busy.

"We live in North Ogden, and so we typically go to the Harrisville Walmart," she said. "We heard rumors that the Clinton Walmart was less busy."

At 3:45 a.m., Roy Boy Scouts Austin and Josh Weeks started helping shoppers with the biggest loads get to their cars in the Clinton Walmart parking lot.

On the way, hoping their good deeds would help their own sales, they would tell the shoppers about the popcorn and treats they were peddling to earn their way to the national Jamboree.

Retailers were speculating that Friday's sales would be closely watched by the nation.

In a news release inviting the media to cover sales at his stores, R.C. Willey CEO Scott Hymas called this year's Christmas shopping period "the most scrutinized Black Friday and holiday shopping period in decades."

Black Friday is a reference to the first day of the Christmas shopping season and the time when retailers are assumed to be making a profit for the year, or moving from red ink to black on their books.

Brent Parkin, senior general manager for Newgate Mall in Ogden, said there is a pronounced emphasis this year among retailers to create as many sales as possible.

"I don't know if (retailers) are doing things differently, but they are trying to maximize their opportunities," he said.

"I think everyone is working hard to capture as many retail sales as they can."

GGP, the parent company that owns the mall, offered a chance to win a free computer or a flat-screen television by giving shoppers at any of their stores in the country a code and instructions for sending a text.

"Other years, we have given gift bags and opportunities to win gift cards by coming early, but we don't have to do that. They can do it by texting," Parkin said.

One trend he has noticed this year is more people shopping locally who normally shop in other areas.

"I think more are staying at home."

Don't you love the way people pretend to be someone else to justify bad behavior. This only proves one thing. That Carl Marx was right. If you say it loud enough and long enough people will believe it.
Anyway, enjoy selling your cars on ebay. You and walmart can enjoy your ill gotten booty. Again, we won't be supporting walmart. People actually died in other parts of the country because of walmarts greed. I hope they get sued for millions.

I think that it has long since happended and people need to let it go. As far as trevor is concerned unless you truly know who the people are who are writing do not be so quick as to judge. maybe the three women have know clue what people are saying. I think it was a bit out of proportion but as the story goes things are always told from others point of view. If thier was no report filed and it seems that I havent heard of anyone dying from this, let it go. As far as selling a story i was approached from this reporter and asked about my claim on a ds system. I did not sell a story just let her know what i was there for and if i had a problem getting it. I feel sorry for these ladies because not one of them has said anything towards these allegations that are being posed against all four of the women from both sides. But for heavens sake it as been almost three weeks and as the rice lady has said have a happy holiday season and let it go already.

Trevor I too was a real by stander.I don't live in Clinton.I was visiting my sons family.I was however standing in an aisle behind the three women as my son and his wife were waiting by the bike area. They saw part of this to and overheard security and store workers approach and talk to the three ladys because it was on security tapes and they were apologizing to them and asked if they wanted to report it.Why would they do this if they were in the wrong.I do think it is sad that this would happen but (1) the girl was knocked down under the box.i didn' t see any blocks but anything is possible.I did hear the ladys talking they had been there for hours. The one lady with light hair was tring to get two for her twins. The lady who got gouged and scratched and yes it did look as if the lady who came in right before the sale started ,try to grab the box the lady and teenager were putting in their basket they then turned to help the other lady the boxes were quite large. There were others helping too.The problem seemed to start when the lady tried to pull the car off the others basket.Yes it was blown out of proportion but the one lady was abusive and I am sure if she would have been nicer the people there would have helped her out. I heard the three ladys say it was okay it was just sad the other lady was rude.Pherhaps they all will learn something from this.Put it behind you forgive and have a wonderful holiday and if you ever do another sale like this, come earlier and be friendly.Sorry my daughter-in-law was adding info as I typed.

I was also there. I was able to get myself one of those cars. Here is how i saw it happen, and its a lot more boring than it has escalated to in these stories. The three "wolves" as they are called here, were on one side of the stack of cars had been camped out there for a long time, and the daughter had just showed up shortly before chaos time on the other side. However, the daughter DID grab one of the last boxes first, and I believe it was Hock who grabbed it while she was still scooting it. Those two had a hold of it when hocks other two friends came over and grabbed it too. Now there was no pushing on ANYONES part, the girl who was on the ground stepped back and tripped on a bag of legos, i believe it was. Therefore falling to the ground. No one was sitting on her. They all just kinda stood there. NO bitting, choking, scratching, hitting, what ever they said, no it did not happen. The only 4 holding the box was the daughter and the other 3. Like I said they just all kinda stood there, and one sitting on the ground, and clung to the box. The daughter just let go of the box and walked away. No violence on anyones part, the scratches could have been from when she fell down or maybe they were fighting for one of the first 2 cars and got the scratches there, but from this little episode, there was no violence. Just hanging on tight to that box. Told you the real story was boring. I think most of the other comments are from a mad hocks and crew, because me and my family were there to whiteness the whole scene and that is not how it happened. And I dont think WB was there to see it either, because the daughter did not have any back up on her side. So yes, boring unviolent story that has been falsified in hopes of selling a story for a newspaper.

Ah ha ha. Nobody can get the story straight. First there was one against three and now there are two against three? WB and daughter vs hocks, van voris, and fletcher. It does not match the orginaly story. Yeah i think the news reporter saw the lady with 3 cars and had to find out how they got away with so many. Plus if the daughter was choking and scratching how come the 3 girls couldnt just walk away with the box? She obviously was holding on to the box too, therfore not having a free hand to choke someone. People are crazy, I will tell ya that but there is no way this one girl could do so much against 3. I am leaning more towards WB's story.

i was within 2 ft. from where this happened.yes it was a ferocious feeding of the pack.by the pack i am refering to WB and DAUGHTER.these two women were in a rage and seemed to enjoy the chaos they were causing.ms hock,ms van voris and and the other ladies who were attacked seemed overwhelmed by the attack.WB and DAUGHTER were animals, preditors ripping their prey into pieces.if i were these two [i can't say ladies] i would slip back into my lair and hide my face.from what i saw and heard they are lucky ms hock and van voris don't file a police report for assult bodily injury and now slander.i am sure there are tapes that would tell the real story and there was plenty of witnesses.i think maybe WB and Daughter would be better served by issuing an apology, perhaps they just lost their minds for a few minuetes.

I too was at the Clinton Walmart during this incident.I arrived at 2pm and ms hock and several other ladies were already there they were all very nice,we were waiting by the helicopters.everything was fine until several other people came in at 4:45 and begain pushing those who had been waiting for hours out of the way.they begin grabbing the merchandise.ms hock and van voris pulled one box down to their cart and begain helping two other ladies get their boxes all these ladies had been there for hours.those boxes were so large they needed the help and you definately could not run with it.wbs daughter tried to take ms hocks box when ms hock and the others tried to hang onto it.this women and another ladie went berserk,it was terrible.they were clawing, trying to bite and choke ms hock they pushed some of these large boxes onto van voris and laid on them.the van voris girl was trying to get out and they wouldn't let her.i saw the choke marks and open scratches on ms hocks arms.i also saw her at the register she had one bos which she gave to an older women.it took three people to take this box and move it.iwas at the next register and heard alady approach them and ask what happened.i also heard store workers asking if they were okay and said they got it all on security cameras.i think wb and her daughter should be ashamed of there actions.

I was there as well. I feel that the young lady that tried to take that car was in the wrong. Those three ladies were helping one another get a car for each of thier children, hince the three cars. and as to the one ladies comment on her daughter being knocked down that is un true. the van voris lady was the one that was underneath the whole thing. i feel if you know what the whole after thanksgiving sales brigs and if you want something that is advertised you should be there early enough to state your claim. i think anyone who showed up at 4 should not be pushing and shoving to get what others have stayed all night to get. i do not think that it was greed. they eachonly got one car a piece for thier children. it was a commroderity that they were helping one another. i stood next to these ladies in the checkout stand and not one said anything bad about the pursuit of this "toy" and the one lady did in fact have scratch marks and reddness on her neck. I think if anyone was a "packof wolves" it was she who pushed the lady down and took three to wrestle the "toy" away. I feel that it is wrong to unjustly comment about someone when they are not here to defend themselves. As far as boycotting Walmart GOOD people like you will not be missed.

I happened to see the whole thing. That poor lady had marks all over her arms. I had stood by alot of these people from around 3 am. jeanne hock only took one. the other two were for the other two ladies. they all only took one a piece. so if you are going to tell a story tell it correctly. your daughter was the one who was beligerent. and how did they run with that big of a box i mean get real. If your daughter had wanted one that badly then maybe she should have camped out all night like the other people. I also know that these three ladies had not commented to the paper. They were also helped by the Walmart staff because of the commotion caused by your daughter. I believe that the stroy is always told differently from peoples views but fromm being a stanby person these three women were no more in the wrong than the person who pushed one down and wouldn't let go. The sad thing about the first story about the 3 woman in Clinton is how skewed the story was told. My daughter was the woman who was attacked by the three woman. She was picking up the box with the car in it when one of the three woman grabbed it from her and called her other two friends for backup. The other two swarmed in with one grabbing the box to help her friend and the other knocking my daughter down. This forced her to release her grip on the box and they pulled it away and literally RAN off with the box. My daughter said the carnivorousness of these three woman was like a pack of wolves.
The really sad part about this is these three woman had already snagged two cars. This was just pure greed.
There was no chocking or any violence on my daughters part. She took the high road and gave it up but perhaps those injuries were from another of the she-wolves victims that was not willing to avoid a confrontation over a silly toy.
We have boycotted Walmart over this episode. I hope they enjoy there obscene profits from this day and I hope the trio Hock, Voris, and the other enjoy the cars.
