SALT LAKE CITY -- A state lawmaker who was accused -- and cleared -- of multiple ethics violations says he wants the Legislature to set up an independent inspector general's office to handle ethics complaints.
Rep. Greg Hughes, R-Draper, says the current system of having lawmakers investigate and ultimately decide whether someone violated ethics rules is too political.
Hughes was cleared by the House Ethics Committee of six misconduct allegations made against him, including a claim that he offered as much as $50,000 in campaign money to former Republican Rep. M. Susan Lawrence if she would change her vote on a controversial school voucher bill in 2007.
But the committee unanimously signed a letter chiding Hughes for conduct unbecoming a member of the Utah House.
